Frolic's Mysteries
last updated: June 18 2001

Hello there!
I don't believe we've ever met. My name is Frolic and this is my peacock friend Fluffin. You may never have heard of us, that's because we're never in Starry Up. We're always off exploring uncharted corners of the galaxy.

I'm always finding new things, but I can't always figure out everything about what I've found, so that's what this section is here for. These are some of the mysteries yet to be solved about Moondreamers. If you've got a clue to something here, or even a new mystery, why don't you share it with me and I'll post it here.

I'd like to thank Brian very much for the special permission to use his pictures of the 1988 dolls, and remind everyone do NOT take any pictures from this section. Thank you!

Released or not?
I thought you would like to meet some of the least known Moondreamers of all. There are twelve of us (and four friends!) who were all set to join the Moondreamers line of dolls in 1988, but something happened and we never made it. So we live in obscurity now, but hopefully this page is going to change all that!

We were uncovered recently by Brian, a Jem fan who joined the Moondreamers fan club on Yahoo. He's got Hasbro's 1988 Pre-Toy Fair Catalogue and shared his discovery. His site MoonDust 4 MoonDreamers is the original and best place for info on the 1988 Moondreamers, so make sure you visit there for more information!

The really exciting part of the mystery is that recently I learned that some of these dolls may have been released in the UK! Nothing confirmed yet, but it's something to watch for as you do your own Moondreamers exploring.
Clues
In a lot of Moondreamers from Europe I once saw a headband that did not match any known Moondreamers headband. It looked a lot like Glitzy Gleamer's would have if she had been released.

Hasbro UK has been known to continue toy lines even after they are cancelled in North America. The Moondreamers annual came out in 1988 and Moondreamers were also featured in My Little Pony activity books until around 1990, so it would be logical to deduct that there may have been new dolls released after 1987.

The mysterious Star Child (see lower on this page) is not one of the known dolls, so this indicates that there were UK exclusives. It would have been logical to have used the dolls that were already designed, so I personally believe they were released too.
New Moondreamers
Four new Moondreamers were to be introduced in 1988 and Crystal Starr, Whimzee, and Sparky Dreamer were set to be re-issued as well. They each had a new Dream Crystal Necklace which you can see in the catalogue pictures at MoonDust 4 Moondreamers.

New Starfinders
Two new Starfinders and their friends were ready to join the line and Bitsy, Roary, Blinky, and Ursa were going to be re-issued too. Of course the new dolls were both in the child mould (like Bitsy and Blinky).

Sunsparklers
These were meant to be the day version of Moondreamers. Instead of glow-in-the-dark parts they had bits that changed colour in the sunlight. They also have puffier hair and it appears they have tinsel in it. All are in the child mould.

Sunfinders
These pairs were the daytime versions of Starfinders, so they too were in the child mould. They seem to have colour changing parts as well. The puppy's name is listed as Sunspot on the picture and Sunscout in the written description.

The Mysterious Star Child
This little Star Child comes from the UK and seems to have borrowed Blinky's dress. Other then that I don't know much about her. Obviously it's not Blinky, but who is she?
A Star Child with wavy blue hair and blue eyesClues
This doll has been spotted twice. The former owner of the second sighting could not remember her name, but thought she was Whimzee's little sister. (A child's imagination or fact?) She seems to have legitimately been dressed in Blinky's dress, and also wears a silver headband and the standard silver tights. She appears to have come with Ursa (or a bear looking exactly like Ursa) and the blue saddle. I don't know about her shoes or any other accessories. Of course it is possible that she was redressed but I don't think so and the only other appearance of this doll was dressed the same way.

I still don't think it's likely that this is meant as a variation on either Bitsy or Blinky. Both came out in the usual form, so it would have had to have been a second version of one if it was a variation. But in Moondreamers the only difference (other then the clothing) is the eye colour and the hair colour and style. If Hasbro were to go to the trouble of altering both, why wouldn't they have released her as a different character and made more sales?

My current theory is that she is meant to be a different character but maybe came out after Moondreamers was cancelled in North America. Possibly to cut costs no new accessories were produced for her so she was dressed in another characters clothing and released with an existing animal figure. Probably her packaging was different to explain who she was and the bear may have been renamed as well. If this was the case, would that mean that other UK exclusives would follow the same example? Would other characters be wearing old clothing with only the hair difference to separate them? (Remember, this is all just theory.)

So who is she really? She is proof that there were indeed UK exclusive Moondreamers, but little is known about her. Did she come out at the same time as the normal doll line-up? Was she from a year after Moondreamers was cancelled in North America? Did she really come with Ursa? Was the bear meant to be a different character too? Is she actually Whimzee's little sister?

Thanks to Sarah, the owner of the mysterious Star Child, for the information and picture.

An Elephant??
This one is pure speculation really. There was a line of Moondreamers knock-offs produced in Germany. They were released in sets with a doll and an animal just like the Starfinders and they copied the moulds with only minor variations. There were three sets, one resembling Bitsy and Roary, one like the UK Star Child and Ursa and one like Blinky and an unknown elephant. Does this mean there was actually a Starfinders set which included an elephant?

All of the figures used in this set were copied directly from Moondreamers and altered slightly. I think this is an excellent indication that a Moondreamers elephant does exist. The other possibilities are that they copied only the elephant from some other toy line, or they made it up entirely on their own unlike the others. I somehow think they probably didn't make this one up.

The Unknown Stumbles
Everyone knows Stumbles is blue. Or is he? Certainly on the show and merchandising he is, and even on the most commonly known release of his doll. But was there a very rare pink version of him released?
Clues
I have seen a loose Stumbles for sale who is most definitely pink. But it is possible that this is his prototype as it is also pink and Hasbro is known to sell off it's prototypes.

I have also seen a MOC photo of Stumbles where he appears pink, but this was a really blurry photo so who knows?
