| Bucky Buckaroo was
sitting on the edge of the Forever Fountain, singing the latest Star Tune
to himself. Everything was working well in Starry Up that day, so nobody
had needed his skills as the Moondreamers' maintenance man. Even the shower
of meteors that had passed overhead earlier had not caused any change,
as it sometimes did, in the strong blue flow of Positron Energy that came
from the Forever Fountain. This special energy worked all of the machines
in Dream Central.
Bucky Buckaroo was bored. He was just about to sing the Star Tune all over again when Celeste appeared. "Hi, Bucky," she shouted, running up to her friend. "You look like someone who's fallen into a moon crater!" "Oh, hi, Celeste," sighed Bucky Buckaroo. "Shimmering starshine! You sound like you need starring up!" exclaimed Celeste. "I'm just bored, I guess," said Bucky Buckaroo. "Nothing needs fixing today so I've got nothing to do," he explained. Unknown to Bucky Buckaroo, Scowlene, the mean witch queen of Castle Insomnia, had been eavesdropping. She had been using one of Professor Grimace's new listening devices that passed sound down through the Black Hole from Starry Up to Monstrous Middle. "I'll soon give you moping Moondreamers something to do!" she cackled. "I think it's about time I interrupted one of your pathetic Dreamcasts." Scowlene hurried down the corridor to the gloomy dungeon where she kept all her imitation Dream Crystals. With a false crystal shining in her bony fingers, she went to find Professor Grimace. With the help of his Black Hole detector, Professor Grimace could show her a way into Starry Up that the Moondreamers hadn't yet blocked. Meanwhile, Bucky Buckaroo had cheered up. "I've had a cosmic idea!" he exclaimed. "You go and find Galaxia and I'll go and get Halley, my comet. Let's have a race across the Star Zone." "Okay!" agreed Celeste, I'll meet you in Star Zone one." Far below, in the place that we know as Earth, but which the Moondreamers call 'Down', people were starting to go to bed. This meant that Whimzee was busy at the Dream Machine, making special individual dreams for all the Earth children. One little girl called Pamela had been asleep for some time. Using the orb which was part of the Dream Machine, Whimzee could see her tucked up into bed. Whimzee had been working hard on Pamela's dream. Pamela was very afraid of cats, so Whimzee had created what she thought would be Pamela's perfect dream. In her dream, Pamela was to have lost her way home and a big, furry cat called Charlie was going to show her how to get back. Pleased with her creation, Whimzee poured the Imaginationcombination, the secret recipe for making happy dreams, into the Dream Machine. After some fizzling and whirring a sparkling Dream Crystal appeared with Pamela's dream ready in it. At that moment Blinky and Bitsy arrived. "Whimzee, look!" shouted Blinky. She pulled Whimzee away from the Dream Machine and pointed up into the sky. "It's Bucky and Celeste," added Bitsy, "they're having a race." Whimzee and the two Star Children watched excitedly. Up amongst the stars, Bucky Buckaroo and Halley, who was a tame comet, were just ahead of Celeste and Galaxia, the flying dragon. The comet was so pleased it was winning, that it kept wagging it's glowing tail of light with excitement. Everyone was so engrossed watching the race, that no one saw Scowlene sneaking up through a Black Hole. Very quietly, she switched Pamela's Dream Crystal for the imitation one and then slipped back down to Monstrous Middle, cackling quietly to herself. Suddenly a Cosmic Cab drew up and Crystal Starr, who was the leader of the Moondreamers, got out. "What's going on?" she asked. "Galaxia should be towing the moon across the sky." Bucky Buckaroo had seen Crystal Starr arrive and decided to call the race a draw. Crystal Starr was cross with Bucky Buckaroo and Celeste so she made them get to work straight away. Galaxia towed the moon into it's proper place. Celeste and Bucky Buckaroo had to help Blinky and Bitsy put the Dream Crystals into the stars. All the stars were set to 'twinkle' and the Dreamcasts began. Whimzee was monitoring the dreams on the Dream Machine when she noticed that something was wrong. Instead of Pamela enjoying the dream she was having a scowley dream. At that moment Sparky Dreamer, the inventor of the Dream Machine, arrived. "Oh Sparky, I am glad to see you!" exclaimed Whimzee. "Can you invent something that will interrupt a Dreamcast? I think one of the stars must have an imitation Dream Crystal in it." Sparky Dreamer opened her tool box, which she always carried with her. She pulled out bits of machinery and within a few minutes she had made a triangular object with flashing lights on. "This starra trap should do the trick," said Sparky Dreamer. "It will splice the Dreamcast into its crystal components." "What does that mean?" asked Whimzee, who could never understand Sparky when she was being technical. "It means this machine will act as a sort of cosmic sponge which will simply soak up the scowley dream," explained Sparky Dreamer. "Watch!" She pressed a button on the machine and it rose up towards the stars. The machine stopped underneath Pamela's star. Whimzee looked at the orb on the Dream Machine and saw that Pamela was now sleeping peacefully. "It works!" exclaimed Whimzee, hugging her friend. "Of course it does," laughed Sparky Dreamer. "Now we can prepare a new Dream Crystal and send Pamela her cat dream tomorrow night." Back in Monstrous Middle, Scowlene was not impressed. "Those horrible Moondreamers," she shrieked, "they always spoil my scowley dreams." With one last stamp of her foot she stormed back into Castle Insomnia. |
