MANSE AND GROUNDS
![]() The Manse from Duddingston Loch
The present manse is set behind a high stone wall on the south side of Old Church Lane and to the east of the Church with extensive views over the Loch. The building is two storeys with an attic and basement, is constructed of rubble stone and was built in 1805, with an addition to the east elevation dating from 1821. An earlier manse, dating from the mid 18th Century, stood next to the Session House near the Church gates.
![]() Plan of Old Manse
The ground between the south of the Church and the edge of the Loch was originally the Manse Glebe, traditionally the area set aside for the minister to grow vegetables or for grazing animals. This piece of ground had become completely derelict until, in the mid 1960s, it was taken over by an enthusiastic gardener, Dr Andrew Nell, who transformed it into an award winning landscaped garden.
