For the fee of an obol, placed in the mouth of the dead at the time of burial, Charon would ferry souls across the river Acheron and Styx into Hades. Those who did not have a funeral (and thus no payment for Charon) were condemned to wander the shore for a hundred years before being allowed to cross.
