Macross II

Episodes Reviewed: Movie version, dubbed

Overall Grade:A
Macross II (That's a 2) really kicked some serious ass when I watched it first.

Storyline: 4
The story is laughable.  A song saves the world from being destroyed by Marduk.  Where the Macross itself fails, a song triumphs.  And this song talk doesn't just appear near the end, it actually shows face right at the beginning.  Not the very beginning, but close.

Style: Comedy/Action
Hey, it's funny, and there's mecha action.

Ch. Development :5
We learn about Hibiki and Ishtar and very little about everyone else.  It's almost as if they thought we already knew everything about them....

Sexuality: 2
Skimpy 'fits.

Romance: 3
A VERY weak triangle.  A small crush. One kiss.  One of them admits defeat. Too weak.

Drama: 6
It was sad when the beer-swilling war correspondent died in the first episode.

Action: 7
Mecha action, violently killed Zentraedi.

Comedy: 5
This should get a ten for Comedy if you find the story funny.  It still deserves an A though.

Dub
Dub Voices:
VERY passable.  Except Ishtar's singing      voice.  Half the song was subtitled, then they bring in the dubbed voice?

Dub Music:
Nonexistent (I believe)

Dub Lines:
If anything, average.  Not bad, Pretty good.

Macross II was one of the few animes to actually blow me away.  Keep in mind that at the time I had only watched Otaku no Video, Tekken the movie, the Toonami animes, dubbed, and (shudder) Raven Tengu Kabuto. I was so sure I had a couple of winners when I rented the two.

Sure the thing about songs saving the world was kinda stupid, but it was still a great anime!  I SO didn't want it to end, but it ended relatively quickly. Sure, the animation, characters, action, and comedy weren't anything special, in fact the anime in general is pretty average, but it still got an A because I didn't find anything horrible nor anything utterly stupid except that whole song thing, although I have come to respect it.  My little brother and little sister, appearantly young enough to understand it, called it wierd because of the song thing.  I really can't persuade you to like this anime, but don't blow it off like other anime sites I've been to.  They always say things like "Macross Plus is SO much better than that piece of crap", but, hey, they don't know how to be relatively unbiased like myself.  I don't compare anything to anything else.  I don't compare similar series to a better or worse similar series to judge it.  I treat every anime as it's own single self.

This anime is about a reporter named Hibiki Kanzaki who one day, during a battle with the Zentraedi, finds a girl on a Zentraedi ship.  He takes her back to earth and plans to do an award-winning story about her, and at the same time, he finds out more about the Zentraedi, a new race known as the Marduk, and what the two have to do with each other.  He also finds out more about the space fortress, Macross, and how it can save humanity.  This kicks ass and there is this one scene near the end... you just have to see it!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
