Outlaw Star
"You Better get Ready!"
Episodes Reviewed: 1-22, 24-26 Toonami dub; 23-24, ADV Video dub; 1-9 DVD
Overall Grade:A
It is completely free of anything that would cause me to call it a ripoff of anything. Thank you!
Storyline: 8
Well, this outlaw somehow gains control of the most technically advanced ship in the galaxy: the XGP-13A2: the Outlaw Star. With this ship, he searches for the "Galactic Leyline", along with some friends and, uh, others. Needless to say, there are others looking for it.
Type:Action/Drama/Comedy
Nothing to say.
Ch. Development:10
Read my lips: 26 or more episodes should be enough time!
Sexuality: 6
Plenty of suggestive themes, lines, and humor. Damn, those first few episodes were PACKED with jokes that 12- kids couldn't understand. Perhaps even older, but society is messed like that. And so much nudity/fan service in episode 23.
Romance: 2
Romance sub-plot; shows face near the end.
Drama: 5
People die. It hurts. An important person dies within the first 5 episodes.
Action: 7
Grappler arms on spaceships. Huh.
Comedy:7
So full of it. This anime never takes itself too seriously.
Dub
Dub Voices:
Very passable
Dub Music:
Nonexistent
Dub Lines:
Average
Censorship:
LOL! Example: (Jim puts his hand on Gene, then looks at his hand... there's nothing there) Jim:Hey, what is this? (What is it indeed? Is it invisible blood?) Gene:I tried to patch it up, but I guess it didn't work.. uh.. (falls down) So..that didn't make much sense, now did it? Also, there's that bathingsuit censorship we've seen in Tenchi, and they cut a hotspring episode.
Toonami did a lot to advertise this thing as an action anime starring this cool, tough "outlaw" guy, but it really doesn't do justice. This guy isn't really that tough! The commercial doesn' even show any sign that there's some humor in the anime! I hate these guys... if only they wren't my only source of free anime..
Outlaw Star is about a guy named Gene Starwind, an outlaw who thinks he's really something big. He eventually, through some twist of fate (yeah, the Toonami way is the only way I can explain it), he gets ahold of the XG-P 13-A2 (?)... later renamed the Outlaw Star. It's basically the basis of the show, since it is used to find the location of the mysterious Galactic Leyline, and the Kei pirates want it. There's a lot of fun, there's assassins, there's cat-women things, there's action, bounty hunters, and the like. It's a lot of fun and the only downer is the incredibly out-of-place ending sequence. It just doesn't feel right in the midst of all that action or humor or overall feeling you get at the end of the episode. Other than that, it's near perfect. Hell, the ending totally blew me off guard more than once, and no anime has ever done that to me... not even Otaku No Video! Not Even Macross Plus! ... Well, maybe Macross Plus.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
