Tenchi the Movie 3: Tenchi Muyo! In Love 2: Tenchi Forever
Episodes Reviewed: N/A, DVD
Overall Grade: D
Yeah, that's the worst grade I've ever given anything that was Tenchi Muyo!. Even Tenchi in Tokyo.
Storyline: 4
One day, Tenchi runs off after yet another of Ayeka and Ryoko's fights, but this time he gets absorbed by an image in a tree. Uh-huh... and I think 10 months later Ayeka and Ryoko finally manage to find Tenchi. But this Tenchi is seemingly older and has little memory of Ayeka and Ryoko. And to make things worse, they find him with another woman named Haruna. Meanwhile, Sasami is in Jurai and Mihoshi and Kiyone help Washu by breaking into the Royal Space Academy to get something that could help solve this problem. In those words it seems pretty original and sounds a lot like Tenchi, but... just wait till you get to the opinion section of this review.
Type: Romance
That's the only genre I could think of. Nothing else.
Ch. Development: N/A
Sexuality: 7
Some sexual themes and nudity. To make it easier for you, the themes are more sexual than the nudity. The nudity itself is less less frequent and in less detail than in the OAV, and the themes are, well, the most extreme of any Tenchi Muyo! universe ever.
Romance: 9
It is romance that causes everything, romance that drives the three main female characters, and, well, romance is the basic theme of this movie. So much, in fact, that there is no other genre that properly fits in... not even comedy or action.
Drama: 0
Heart-wrenching tale to some, but I didn't feel anything. Nor was there any kickass moment or even a rising plot. The ending comes sorta out of nowhere and passes quickly. No amazing battle or even dramatic music (that I can remember).
Action: 0
Absolutely no real action at all. Out of Ryoko's many powers, she only uses two: teleport and flight. Not even telekineses with Ryo-Ohki!
Comedy: 1
A single scene in the beginning, and then it's nonexistent. Well, maybe one or two funny lines, but that's all.
Dub
Dub Voices: 8
Same as always... *sigh*
Dub Music: nonexistent
Dub Lines: 10
Good as always.
I can't believe that I had actually waited this long and got a bit escited about this movie. Man, did it suck. While it's not just the fact that the entire movie is based on romance and that the majority of the movie focuses on Tenchi, Ryoko and Ayeka, it could have gotten the poor grade right there. What really sucks is the fact that the movie doesn't really 'feel' like a Tenchi movie at all. The only things that relate to the Tenchi-verses at all is the fact that the characters are Tenchi characters and that part of the movie involves putting things in specific places like in Tenchi the Movie 1. There is absolutely no action, and the frequent clues completely betray the idea that Tenchi is indifferent to all of the girls. It's plainly obvious that Tenchi thinks about Ryoko more than Ayeka and doesn't really seem to even have a single thought about the others. It's also obvious that even though the ending says that things are back to what had been, it more strongly suggests that he'll end up with Ryoko. Sure, everyone knows that the creators meant for him to end up with Ryoko, but they never suggested it this much nor did it seem too obvious at any time. There isn't a single time when he even thinks of Ayeka in the entire movie.
Now, let's start talking about the art. It seems more artistic/realistic. That can be a good thing. In fact, I see nothing wrong with it so let us change the subject. The story itself may seem like a Tenchi story, but you may notice some somewhat familiar things. When Tenchi leads his new illusion life, he is a tortured artist with the picture of a woman he doesn't know in his head, so he draws the painting of that woman in his head. This of course angers his girlfriend Haruna. Now, while I haven't ever seen any other movie with those elements, I have seen a Boy Meets World episode like that, which must mean that there was a movie like that. Probably a classic one.
Did I mention that the movie betrays everything Tenchi is about? Yep, there is no action and no comedy. That's right, no comedy. Sure, there's the familiar goofyness of Mihoshi, but that is all numbed down to her rambling. And what about Ryo-Ohki? If you thought that Ryo-Ohki didn't get enough screen time in the other two movies, prepare to be amazed. After watching you'll likely forget that Ryo-Ohki actually existed, as you won't see her anywhere.
While the movie seems to be able to do okay on its own, the only major selling point is that it is a Tenchi movie, and as a Tenchi movie it is even worse. If you want to see it, rent. Buy only if you are crazy, can't rent, or just want to have a completed collection of Tenchi movies and series.
That's my Story and I'm Sticking to it!
