Blue Sub No. 6
Episodes Reviewed: 1-4, Toonami Dub
Overall Grade:C+
Very deserving from it's odd feel and cheesy plot. Very cheesy. I totally knew what would happen near the end. And the real kicker is that they went through all this just to find out the truth. That comes with a "thinking" message, but the message itself is cheesy and doesn't really need much thinking through to figure out what was meant.
Storyline: 2
Hmm... evil scientist releases monsters and believes that they can coexist with us. Oh, and there's a hero!
Genre: Action
Duh.
Ch. Development: 2
What's there to know? You have a hero who saves the day eventually, a heroine of sorts that tries to save the day by getting the hero, there's the "evil" scientist, and that's all we are really told. I never gave a single damn for these characters. It was just too damn cheesy.
Sexuality: 4
Let's see... we have our heroine who has her jacket unzipped for about two episodes, and, umm... oh! Near the end of the first episode, we get to see a strange mutant look like it's having an orgasm, when it's actually dying! Maybe this should go under "dub voices".
Romance: 2
Other than the always obvious, cheap, stupid love sub-sub-plot between you-know-who and you-know-who.
Drama: 4
Well, some monsters and humans die, but it never really means anything. I told you, I never gave a damn!
Action: 7
Submarine Action! Huh!? Well that's new...
Comedy: 0
What do you think that 0 means?
Dub
Dub Voices: 8
They might not sound like anyone you would want to talk to, but at least they sound normal. Just stay away from whoever does the voice of that mutant that sounds like he should be in La Blue Girl. Oh-oh. Another hentai reference. I'm gonna die, I just know it!
Dub Music: N/A
Nonexistent
Dub Lines: 10
I had to give it a 10. It didn't suck. Well, not enough.
Censorship:
Well, they managed to paint away all cigarettess, and I think there's less violence. You wanna know what sucks? I can't look into how much censorship there is because I'm not interested enough in this anime, and I really don't want to spend any hard-earned money just for the sake of this review.
I've erased the first half of my original review because what I said was insane. The CG in this series actually does go together very well most of the time. In fact, it adds quite a bit of realism and detail to the anime. However, this now makes me start to believe that Blue Sub 6's only selling point is the amazing CG... which is something that should never be so. A game with stunning graphics does not make a stunning game; it's the same with anime.
Although the writers tried to make this one of those "thinking" anime, you could easily call on the plot and therefore it kills itself. The message in the story sounded like these writers tried really hard just to think up a cheesy little message such as that. Now, I'm not saying that anime should have a philosopher's message or anything like that, but I just mean that if you need a message to tell in an anime, first, you should think up a message, then the story, then the anime. Yep, my brain is actually working right today!
*UPDATE*
Upon seeing a preview of this anime, it actually looks pretty good; better than what I remember about it. Still, take a look at stuff up there and maybe watch the series and you'll see that it's still not that good. I still stand by my opinion that the guy who created it just started with a normal plot and added CG and a half-baked message about humanity.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
