Pokemon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back
Episodes Reviewed: N/A, dubbed
Overall Grade: A
Even if you normally don't like Pokemon, this movie is better than the series in many ways. To put it simply, Mewtwo is what Pokemon needs.
Storyline: 8
The Genetically Produced Pokemon, Mewtwo, escapes the control of the scientists who created him. I saw that scene in Japanese, and it kicked major a-word. Normally, I would say the actual word, but there might still be some kiddies out there just learning how to surf the 'net.
Type: Action/Comedy
The action is there, the comedy is there, all is right with the world.
Ch. Development: N/A
Not like movies ever counted in anime series.
Sexuality: 1
I'm not at all sure... well, Brock always is the main source of this, but he isn't as funny as he is in the series.
Romance: 1
Slight, subtle romance (inflated by dub writers).
Drama: 8
No deaths, but very dramatic. This actually got my mom to like it. I'm still embarassed by it, still. Oh, yeah, honor isn't foreign to Pokemon.
Action: 5
Plenty of Pokemon action. It adds to the drama.
Comedy: 4
As always, Brock and Team Rocket are there to make as laugh. Just not as much as they should. And seeing those Psyducks fight was funny.
Dub
Dub Voices: 8
They fit perfectly, but there is still some room for improvement.
Dub Music: 3
It fits fine, but there wasn't anything wrong with the original Japanese score (same music from the series), or the original Japanese silence.
Dub Lines: 6
I'm sure that it works well most of the time, but there are some changes that did not have to be. For instance, oh, wait, I'm thinking of the other movie. Well, there was that line they changed. Mewtwo didn't say this in the Japanese version, "I have disabled the Pokemon's special abilities." The Pokemon chose not to use their abilites because of honor and pride. This was one important theme, and the dramatic music and familiar music was dumped for "Brother my Brother," which fits on some level, but not as much as the other music.
Censorship: No Idea
I certainly hope there isn't any. There isn't any I know of.
One great movie. Sure it's Pokemon, but don't let that turn you off; it's a great movie that deserves some attention. It doesn't follow the tired themes of the series, and has something we've seen in other anime before; a genetically engineered creature run amok. But this pokemon is not crazy; in fact, he's quite smart and incredibly powerful. The fight between Mewtwo and Mew is one of the greatest scenes I've ever scene, even though it doesn't end in a dramatic show of power, but that's the theme of the movie. There is a purpose to everything, and the fight not ending the way you might want to has a purpose. It's about peace and all that other stuff. Anyway, just give it a chance; you're likely to find it everywhere.
That's my Story and I'm Sticking to it!
