Big O
Episodes Reviewed: 1- 13, Toonami Dubbed,1-14 Adult Swim version.
Overall Grade: B-
Mega-repetetive, Dorothy scares me, and after all this time, it still reminds me of the Batman cartoon series. And the intro reminds me of the intro from the Batman '70's live-action TV series. The difference? In Big O, the words, "Big O" are repeated 15 times, while in Batman, the word "Batman" was repeated 8 times. Oh, and in Big O, there was a short spurt of Japanese singing, while Batman had "nananananananana."
Storyline: 5
Upon reflection, I realize that there is a storyline. Let's see... Roger Smith lives in Paradigm City, a city that is closed off from the rest of the world. A city where, 40 years ago, something happened to make everyone lose their memories. Roger Smith happens to be a negotiator... what exactly that job is supposed to do is unknown to me, but just use your imagination. As he solves the problems found in this city of amnesia, he starts to become interested in finding out about the past... about what happened 40 years ago, and eventually, about himself. Apparently, towards the end of the first half, it's all connected to megaduces (giant robots) known as "Bigs," of which, Roger has one, the Big O. Technically, the plot doesn't actually exist until 8 or so episodes in.
Type: Action
Mech action with no blood. Maybe in the uncut version, but I don't know.
Ch. Development: 3
I'm being very generous here. There is very little change in any of the characters. That 3 is very generous of me, so shush. Even up to episode 14, it's still a little generous.
Sexuality: 3
There was that one scene when "Angel" wore only her underwear for much of the entire episode. Other than that...
Romance: 3
Subtle and proven to be nonexistent by the end... or is it?
Drama: 3
The way the guy defeated some of the huge monsters and megaduces was just plain cool. But most of the battles just weren't varied enough. There was a total of one dramatic battle.
Action: 5
I really wanted to give this a 3. Anyway, huge robots destroying parts of cities and fighting. Not much blood.
Comedy: 3
Maybe a couple of funny lines here and there. And a toy robot bomb.
Dub
Dub Voices: 8
Average. One or two can get on my nerves, but usually they're okay.
Dub Lines: 10
All understandable, etc.
Censorship: I don't know.
For the first time ever, I can't even guess what the censorship is.
Big O is respectable, but it's not very entertaining (until it picks at the end of the first half). My favorite part of all time was during the credits when I saw that butler fire the huge gun. Anyway, the music has a distinct feel to it, but I don't know what that feel exactly is. I do know that it doesn't get me worked up at all like some of the original DBZ music does, or the Sakura Taisen themes. The action isn't very original. The anime brings several questions up, such as where Big O comes from. From what I've seen, the answer never comes. However, this anime isn't about the robot. That in itself is strange. Well, not really, but it's strange that it never shows us just where the beasts and robots come from. Other than the mech dueling, the main character, Roger Smith is a negotiator in the city of amnesia. That's one thing I hate. He always has to say something about the city of amnesia. Of course, because of the amnesia thing, there are some messages relating to humanity issues and memories. It's hard to understand it at first. What's hard to understand is the unanswered questions. We don't get any answers, and it's annoying as hell! And the theme that is supposed to put all these episodes together, where the story builds up and ends in a dramatic climax... WHERE IS IT? This anime is very annoying, but has a few redeeming qualities. It's wierd like that. In fact, several people at my school actually watched it and called it "retarded," but most of the people I know at school have limited vocabluaries like that. Hell, I saw someone who had a Trigun DVD. Naturally, I was interested and excited, then I said "can I see?" Yeah, I'm like that. Anyway, I couldn't find the plot and I asked "What is it about?" The guy replied with "it's about a guy, with a gun..." So very annoying. Well, I actually have nothing to say left about Big O.
That's my Story and I'm Sticking to it!
