Serial Experiments Lain
"Everyone is always Connected."
Episodes Reviewed: 1-3, 5-13
Damn, why did I miss ep. 4, titled Layer: 04 Religion?
Overall Grade: A- if you appreciate it; D if you're an average person who wants a story you can follow.
Serial Experiments Lain messes with your mind and makes you wonder what is real and what not as you try to follow the story. Then you may blank out and wonder if you're watching a music video, then realize that there's no way you could be watching MTV right now and then you get confused. If you stick with it, you can follow the story and not ask too many questions. This was what I thought would be a warm-up to prepare me for NG Evangelion, but it wasn't that bad at all!! But enough talk.
Storyline: 10
The best storyline is the type that requires absolute attention all the way through and some thinking. If you're like me, you''ll always be anxiously waiting what's next at the end of each episode. Breaking tradition, I will not type the storyline right here.
Type: I.. Don't Know
It's not Action, kinda Mystery, not exactly Horror, not exactly Drama, almost Suspense, not at all Romance, not quite Fantasy... I can't explain it.
Ch. Development: 7
There is definite Development especially as Lain eventually uses her powers to find out who she is and what the mystery surrounding her is. Other characters not quite as much.
Sexuality: 4
Lain is naked at the Ending Credits though you don't see nothin' and it doesn't turn you on, so does it really count? I suppose there are also some sexual themes scattered around a few episodes, but it ain't nothin'.
Romance: 2
Light romance and romantic themes, like crushes and stuff.
Drama: 9
There is an immense amount of revelation and several counts of suicide, as well as things that shock and surprise you... probably... maybe... and of course the kickass ending. Also, despite the fact that this story ain't at all likely, it has amazing reality depth.
Action: 7
There's violence, I'll give you that. Suicide ain't pretty. Neither is seeing a dead man transform into an Akira-esque monster-blob-thing.
Comedy: 1
I remember there being a little comedy, but I'm not sure quite where from exactly.
Dub
Dub Voices: 10
Couldn't have been better. No way. Not in any way I can think of.
Dub Music: N/A
And I am 92% certain of it.
Dub Lines: 8
I think I heard some ridiculous lines... yeah, like "No, I tell you it's not" when the line could have been "No, it's not." The "I tell you" part sounds kinda fake. But then again, Lain is pretty, uh... never mind.
So, ya eager to find out about this? Okay... the show starts out with seeing a young girl commit suicide and the talk at school following the event. It seems that several people have received e-mails from the girl who commited suicide, and our main character Lain Iwakura hears about this and checks her e-mail later that day. Unlike the others, Lain becomes kinda obsessed with the message and witnesses another student suicide (though this time I'm not sure if it truly happened). Lain also becomes a little obsessed with her Navi, which is basically a futuristic computer. Just as the Navi is to the computer, the Wired is to the Internet. Remember that. Anyway, while all this is happening, Lain also makes pseudo-friends with classmates Arisu, and her friends whom I can't remember. Some time in the second episode you can tell that Lain isn't your every-day creepy-quite girl. There seems to be a strong connection with her and the wired as well as some mysterious person- or possibly an organization who gives her information and equipment for her to be more present in the Wired.
Okay, that's finished. Now my afterthoughts: for me, Lain was a nice mind jogger and felt pretty amazing. The anime was good too (heh, heh, I'm kidding I'm kidding). The whole mystery between what Lain is exactly, her existince and the Wired will mainly get you interested throughout the series, and perhaps some predictions as to how she will develop. Something ought to get you interested in the first episode at least. I suppose it would be okay to say that the entire series is like the last two episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, but that wouldn't be too accurate. You just have to see it to believe it.
That's my Story and I'm Sticking to it!
