Kiki's Delivery Service
Episodes Reviewed: N/A
Overall Grade: A
It's pleasant, and it's good for the kids. It's got a nice story, nothing wrong with it, original enough, and, yes, it's got memorable characters. Plus I'd rather watch this than do anything Harry Potter-related anytime.
Storyline: 9
On the night of a full moon, young witches hoping to become full-fledged witches must leave their home and live in another town for a year in order to test themselves and prove their worth. Kiki is one such witch and we follow her as she chooses her city to live in. There, she must learn to live on her own, make friends, gain trust, and allt hat other coming-of-age cr--- uh, stuff. As you might guess, she uses her ability to travel using her broom to start a delivery service.
Type: ???
I keep hearing that these kind of movies are "coming-of-age" stories. To tell the truth, I hate using that phrase, but I can't think of a proper genre. Therefore, I choose to use the triple question marks rather than ever label this as "coming-of-age." I just hate that phrase.
Ch. Development: 7
You really see some changes in our main character Kiki and how she handles her life. Not really that dramatic or drastic or anything, but you do see some changes. At least some.
Sexuality: 0
Absolutely nothing. This is a kid's flick, and I see nothing wrong with it. Yeah.
Romance: 3
Like I've said before, this has the kind of romance called 'subtle.' It starts out nonexistent, then adds clues, then, well, actually it becomes more of a friendship, but that's okay too. I somewhat prefer it.
Drama: 4
There is a dramatic action sequence near the end; there being some sort of crisis and all. But there isn't much drama at all anytime else nor is there anything that gives off much of a crisis outside the "I'm running late; I lost that item" zone.
Action: 3
See 'drama.'
Comedy: 5
Not once have I ever lost my breath laughing, but I have laughed. There is some lighthearted, happy, kiddy fun.
Dub
Dub Voices: 9
For the most part, there is nothing wrong witht he voices. In fact, they match very well. Unfortunately, the sheer fact that I will never see or hear anything new from Phil Hartman causes me to take off a single point. *sniff* NewsRadio wasn't that bad!! *cries*
Dub Music: ?2?
I heard some dub music, I hated it. I just can't stand that sort of stuff. For some reason, hearing even the same lyrics in Japanese masks the annoyingness of it and even makes it enjoyable. But then, those are the words of a developed anime purist.
Dub Lines: 7
For the most part, all enjoyable and respectable. But there are still some annoying cartoon cliches that I will never ever accept. Ever.
Censorship: 0
Nothing different from the tape I watched and the version I saw on the Disney Channel. Then again, that could be the commercial breaks talking.
Kiki's Delivery Service is another great anime created by anime genius Hayao Miyazaki. Should you ever get the chance, watch his other works such as Princess Mononoke, Laputa, and Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind.
This is a great anime movie to watch once in a while, but not the kind you could watch nonstop. Still, it's a great video to own, and if the DVD is ever released, which is highly doubtful, get it. You're likely to appreciate the- dare I say- "coming of age" story and the forgettable-but-still-memorable characters. Plus, in this insanely stupid Harry Potter era, you can show your child or nephew/niece or little brother/sister or cousins a nice, healthy, pro-anime alternative. Must-get.
That's my Story and I'm Sticking to it!
