Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth
Episodes Reviewed: DVD
Overall Grade: A- (C for non-Eva fans)
What? No plus?
Storyline: 10
I may think that I am biased, but I think that the story is pretty damn good. Death is a compilation of the events of NGE episodes 1 through 24 as a refresher in order to help you remember all of the important parts of the series. I've heard of "shocking new footage" being added, but I haven't seen any. Rebirth is the main thing you're looking for in this package. Rebirth is completely new stuff. After the defeat of the last Angel, Kaoru Nagisa, Shinji has no one left to look to except Asuka, who is still unconscious. Meanwhile, NERV is on Level-1 alert, despite the last Angel being defeated. Kinda reminds you of America's current role, huh? Well, the difference is obvious, though, as the secret organization SEELE surprise attacks NERV in order to take control of the two remaining Eva units. It's a horrible struggle to resist SEELE as its special forces easily overcome NERV's non-combat staff and make it to Central Dogma, while the only remaining Eva pilot, Shinji Ikari, is too out of it to do anything! How will NERV get through? Can Shinji and Asuka manage to fight back, and what about the rest of NERV? The film ends with a shocking cliffhanger that leaves you wanting MORE! Thankfully, more is coming...
Type: Drama/Action
What about comedy? Completely sucked out, spit out, and stomped on.
Ch. Development: N/A
But man, is there a lot of it! It's like Death is just one of those episodes that are made of clips of old episodes, while Rebirth is an alternate episode 25!
Sexuality: 6
Amazingly, it's only a matter of a couple of scenes to give this sexuality a rating of 6. There's the infamous (from what I've heard) masturbation scene (not an actual scene, don't get any ideas) and several scenes from the previous episodes.
Romance: 5
5 is a normal rating, meaning the romance you would see is completely normal and nothing out of the ordinary. Nobody sacrificing themselves in the name of love or anything like that, because it's not Anno's style. That said, maybe this should be a 4.5.
Drama: 10
It's like, OH DEAR GOD that was sooooo COOL! And there were parts that were like OH DEAR GOD, whyyyyy?? In other words, the words "oh dear god," when said twice, make up a score of 10. The first one comes from the scene I call "The revival of the warrior" and the second one being the brutal attack on NERV headquarters.
Action: 8
The assault on NERV headquarters was just brutal. Blood and dead staff members everywhere. That plus there's also the amazing realization that Misato kicks ass... and... shoots... heads... At least they didn't show exposed bones and charred corpses.
Comedy: 0
Absolutely nothing.
Dub
Dub Voices: 7
The dub voices this time around were about the same as the series, but somewhat better. But I still hate Asuka's voice.
Dub Music: Nonexistent
Yatta! Or... maybe not... Nah, "yatta!" sounds just about right.
Dub Lines: 9
It's usually 100% on the money, but whenever it isn't, it sucks. Still, they earned a 9 rating because of all the effort they did on it, because few translators go that far *cough, FUNimation, cough*
Censorship: Yeah, right
This being shown on TV is entirely implausible. The day they air this on standard cable television is the day I... uh... well I can't think of anything serious that I would be willing to do, but you get the idea.
Death and Rebirth is an original movie like no other. Well, maybe just Rebirth. Death is more like one of those Simpsons clip show episodes. Rebirth is the real feature, and you all know it now. However, there's nothing wrong with Death. Death contains new footage and great music, but that's all that's really new. Rebirth brings all the morally wrong things with the NGE series and all the religious symbolism to an extremely high level, and it never before could it possibly be this good. Sure, politically correct people and those who are easily offended due to the religious references will be against it, and those who can't comprehend (enough of) all the crazy stuff that's going on well be lost, but for those who have a broad mind may be pleased with the result of this movie. Unless they didn't watch the series, or if they did, then it's unless they had high expectations. Okay, so I guess I've proved that it's not easy to like this movie, but it is definitely good if you give it a chance and make an effort to like it. But for those who don't want to go through the trouble... this movie gets a C rating. I can't bring myself to give it a D. It's just too good to degrade it to that.
That's My Story and I'm Sticking to it!
