Magical Girl Pretty Sammy
(Ryo-ohki) "As Pretty Sammy, you can communicate with me, and you can hear a pin drop from miles away!"
(Pretty Sammy) "How does that help me here?"

Episodes Reviewed: 1, 3, subtitled

Overall Grade: B+
Really fun, and really funny, yet slightly disturbing.

Storyline: 7
In an alternate Tenchi Universe (I think there are about six), Sasami Kawai is given the ability to become a magical girl by Tsunami, future queen of the Magical Kingdom Juraihelm.  Sasami doesn't really have to do anything until the jealous Ramia, the Juraihelm Queen candidate who was passed up, secretly transforms Sasami's best friend Misao into the evil magical girl Pixy Misa and has her make trouble on Earth, giving Sasami more trouble than she needs!  Meanwhile, her brother Tenchi is being fought over by Ayeka and Ryoko, both students in his school, while Mihoshi and Kiyone live in the same complex as the Kawai family's store CD Vision, where they work.  That takes care of what everyone from the old series are doing.  Oh, and Sasami's mother is a washed-up singer who currently owns CD Vision where she plays all of her old hits for all to listen.

Type: Comedy/Magical Girl

Ch. Development: 2
I've seen the first and last episodes and I don't see much difference.  Nobody seems to have developed at all.  Maybe seeing the second episode will make me think different.

Sexuality: 4
Disturbingly, the opening sequence shows for a brief moment a naked Sasami during a transformation sequence, and later another one where there are bits of Sasami fanservice.

Romance: 4
The whole Ryoko and Ayeka problem that was present in past series is present here, but is thankfully phased out in Magical Project S.

Drama: 6
It's late at night right now and I can't think of much to say about it right now.

Action: 4
It's a Magical Girl-type, so...

Comedy: 5
There is a basic amount of comedy that can create a short laugh, and a couple of scenes that are hilarious the first time around, but nothing that will leave a lasting impression to keep you laughing for the rest of the day.  ...   Maybe that's a good thing.

Magical Girl Pretty Sammy was created after Pretty Sammy made her debut during the Mihoshi Special and Tenchi Universe.  It was about time she got her own show.  While this short 3-episode series was funny and entertaining with a decent amount of drama that is just a bit lower than Sailor Moon, it was still only 3 episodes and never got a real ending... unless there's more in the works.  The good side, however, is that the series is easy to collect as it's only 3 episodes.  The bad side is that you'll need tremendous luck finding this.  Unless you shop on the 'net.  Pioneer is being lazy or maybe they're having problems, as they haven't released a Pretty Sammy DVD and didn't work on a dub for Magical Project S.  If there's anything Cartoon Network needs for children viewers of Toonami, it's just that.  Anyway, the short story is, this anime is perfect for those who can find it and not find Magical Project S... or if you already found and collected Magical Project S, then this is a good buy.  Ah, hell, it's good for anyone who watched and enjoyed at least one Tenchi series.

That's My Story and I'm Sticking to it!
