Neon Genesis Evangelion the Movie: End of Evangelion
"Please... help me"
Episodes Reviewed: N/A
Overall Grade: A+
Am I biased? Slightly, but it deserves an A+. Anno is like a dark, serious version of Andy Kaufman. Of course, all I know about him is from Man on the Moon, but I stand by my claim.
Storyline: 10; 9.5 as a stand-alone movie.
After the events of the TV series (eps 1-24), Shinji is pretty much near mental breakdown. He is now scared of Rei Ayanami, which he now knows a disturbing secret about. He was forced to kill his closest friend Kaoru (I don't know why someone would want to have ol' "1-episode-life" boy as a fav character, but I'm not one to judge) under orders of defeating the final Angel, who was Kaoru. The only one left to turn to is Asuka, but she's unconscious after her own series of traumatic events. So he can't be in the right frame of mind when SEELE, the group that created and controlled NERV, attacks the Japan branch of NERV after Commander Ikari's disobedience. Their goal is to take control of the EVA units and the human instrumentality project, and perhaps even Third Impact! How will we fare when the fate of humanity rests on the shoulders of a mentally unstable 14-year-old boy?
Type: Action/Drama/Kill your mind
Ch. Development: N/A
Needless to say, it's way past 10.
Sexuality: 7.8
There is a lot of nudity; some of it really gross. Also the whole masturbation thing that everyone seems to be talking about. Damn it, that's not all there is to it!
Romance: ??
I don't know if you can actually call it romance, but... uh... well if it is called romance I'd give it a.... well I don't know! I'm not really too sure about this. But know this: Gendo is actually risking it all ("it" being equal to humanity) to rejoin his late wife, while Shinji repeats over and over again in his mind about his own self-image and possible love of Asuka, which has changed dramatically from the episode in which she is introduced. A lot more stuff in there too. Damn this is complex!
Drama: 10
The greatest amounts of drama do not exist in actions, but in the human mind. Heh, I made that one up myself. Nothing screams "Internal Struggle" more than End of Evangelion.
Action: 10
My gawd is this gruesome. Not only are there kiloliters (yes, kiloliters) of blood, but there is also robots fighting to the death, arms falling off, things getting split in half, explosions everywhere, armored armed troops killing non-armed staff, exposed bones... and it's still better looking to me than Akira... nah, it's slightly... no, it is worse. *shudder*
Comedy: ABSOLUTE ZERO
Amazing for an anime series that started off like a normal anime series. Oh, yeah, this is a movie.
Dub
Dub Voices: 9
I currently have loads more respect for the voices, but that's mainly due to the commentary.
Dub Music: N/A
Dub Lines: 10
I no longer care.
Censorship: Zero footage would be left
To those of you who doubt the power of End of Evangelion, fear, for it shall turn your mind into putty and force you to look deep within your psyche and soul about your own flaws and self-worth. Not only that, but this movie is awesomely gruesome and may make you want to turn your head and look like you will throw up like Maya. To the weak-minded it may make you question your sexuality, though I suspect it will be a rare case. Do you want to see pretty much all of your favorite characters die? Not me, since mine is Shinji, but pretty much everyone else dies, or is dead before the movie starts. Hamlet, eat your heart out and throw it up. This is an absolute must for any fan of the series, and I highly reccomend it to any true otaku. I also plan to use this to bring all God-fearing citizens into submission. Anno-san's got issues.
Of course, if you don't like NGE (don't worry, it actually does happen even to smart people, despite the myths), then I can understand why you wouldn't like the movie. If you are seriously religious, then you could be offended by pretty much everything because you could also have ultra-strong morals. Of course, chances are you're not religious if you're reading this, because the only thing that seems like anime and is religious is Superbook, but it's still undecided to me if it's plausible that it was actually produced in Japan. The music isn't too memorable (the two songs are actually in English, though, so it's much easier to get those lyrics in your head), and the plot requires some heavy thinking, plus there's far too much symbolism to comprehend. Heck, this movie has stumped many an otaku before it was even released stateside. You likely won't even want to watch it if you liked the characters of the series because Shinji is more pitiful than ever, and everyone else is finished off in the first half of the movie. Still, I'll say the same thing I said before: I liked the ending. It was truly a completion of the character of Shinji, and a definite end to the series that could not have been done through television.
That's my Story and I'm Sticking to it!
