Greed, Rants, and Anime on TV
Hiya! I'm gonna talk about anime on TV this month.
What a shock! In one month alone, Cartoon Network has launched several new anime series. Unfortunately, several of them were part of the "Giant Robot Week," and was shown in a disrespectful manner. Why show the first episode, some episode somewhere in the middle, and one near the end for Martian Successor Nadesico and different series of Macross? Not only that, but there was the unreasonable airing of Neon Genesis Evangelion, which they only showed the first two episodes of (the going theory: if you're to scared to show the entire series, don't show any at all). That one week did do some good: I feel like watching Nadesico after I'm finished with Excel Saga and Love Hina.
But what is the point of all this? Isn't it the goal of television channels both here and in Japan to show anime merely for profit? Yes; there may be some differences, but all in all, it's just for profit. The difference here is that anime is being show because some series have proven to be profitable, and also because anime here is (sadly) a huge fad. Why don't I like this? It might be only what I feel, but "discovering" and watching a new anime gives me a certain feeling that I treasure; that is why I am an otaku. When masses of children start to get into anime, and jerks and perverts start to get into what you get into, then that feeling doesn't disappear, it becomes defiled. Believe it or not, that is why I don't like anime being on TV. It's to protect a part of me that I don't fully understand.
That feeling was taken from me in several ways when .hack//sign was released. At the time, I wanted to check out the .hack game, and had I done that, I know I would have looked forward to watching the anime. Cartoon Network destroyed the feeling I would have had doing that, and I would then feel weird thinking about getting the game. I still feel like getting the game, but I don't want to seem like I'm getting it because of Cartoon Network's airing of the anime.
In a way, I knew that Cartoon Network could not keep airing the same crap over and over. Still, I expected a certain type of anime from them; one that would be unreleased, but still okay. One that doesn't have a very strong following, and one that I wasn't interested in seeing before it was aired, anything but a really good one that I haven't watched yet. They got Rurouni Kenshin. Damn. After spinning and coughing in disbelief (weird, huh?) I decided I would add that to this editorial.
YamiD50: you're way too calm about this! Why in the hell ought Toonami to release Rurouni Kenshin? It's been out, and it has an ultra-strong following! It's been selling strong, so CN isn't doing anyone a favor by showing how good it is; it's merely trying to siphon from the huge popularity (and profits) of a really good series... and I haven't seen it yet! You ruined my dream, ya bastards! AAARRRR
HikariD50: Okay, that's enough of that. This certainly got us off guard, but it's only natural, isn't it? After all, it fits all of the characteristics of a Toonami anime... except maybe Hamtaro. But is that any reason to once again stop airing Zoids mid-series? Not at all. But they have done so before with Sailor Moon. If there's one thing these people deserve, it's a large lesson in respect. Truth be told, I expected CN to just show DBZ, then later replace that with DBGT, and show Zoids and if the need should arise, show other anime that nobody cared too much about. I expected to air another Gundam series actually. After that I would hope they would show an anime from a Shonen Jump series... after all, CN and Viz are working together, though I don't know why.
So, it should be no surprise, no matter how much we (or me... wait, shouldn't that be "I"?) may not like it, that CN will air new series, which will occasionally be something thousands of us really like and will (or have) rant(ed) about. This wouldn't anger me as much if they treated these series with a bit more respect and wouldn't limit it to make it more appealing (or "safe") from the children who watch it. It doesn't matter what they say or what their actions may say... they know that their number-1 audience is elementary students. Once they start treating good anime with respect 100% of the time, then I'll stop ranting.
