Episodes Reviewed: Toonami-shown episodes during "Giant Robot Week" (*shudder*)

Overall Grade: B-

What I saw was original, entertaining, and not very cliche. I just felt it was missing something, but I'm not quite sure what.

I'm not too sure about the actual storyline (CN uses anime worse than a tool: no respect whatsoever). From what I can gather, the giant robot Dai-Guard was created to stop the attacks of giant monsters from another dimension, but the sheer fact that none have appeared means it's used more as a mascot than as a weapon. Of course, there's at least one person that knows that Dai-Guard is more than that. I don't recall his name, but he's energetic, no? Anyway, as expected, the monster appears, the guy (and two friends) get into Dai-Guard and use it to help the citizens escape the menace from another dimension.

From what I've seen, there isn't much at all.

There seems to be much less of this than sexuality. There's always the potential, though (there's always potential for romance if there is one character each for either sex).

To tell the truth, what I saw was not very exciting, and failed to bring out any sort of response I can immediately recall. Not very memorable I'm afraid.

Mech-on-monster mayhem! That's a lot of words starting with "m."

There wasn't much that was really funny, but you could tell that there is an overall lightheartedness throughout the episode. The funniest thing I could remember is those people having to fill out stacks of paperwork just to allow Dai-Guard to go into action.

The first of three or four "Giant Robot Week" anime *shudder*.

Dai-Guard seems like it's okay. About two months before GRW I was planning on spending money on this anime. After watching it, it seems less worth it, but still better than many anime I've seen. Overall it doesn't really force much of a response out of the viewer, and its characters have overused personalities. Overall, its only saving points are the fact that its plot is original and not blatantly ripped off some other anime, and that the mech, Dai-Guard, isn't your average giant mech. In the first and second episodes it looks pathetically weak. That might make it seem more realistic than it was meant to be, because chances are, if we attempted to make a giant robot, it would probably move around as well as Dai-Guard.

Dai-Guard isn't a sure-fire anime, and if anything, airing it on Cartoon Network has produced an effect opposite of what would be expected. For instance, I was seriously considering buying a volume, but after seeing it, I'll be putting it off for maybe a year or two.
