Neon Genesis Evangelion (Manga)
Mangas Reviewed: Graphic Novels 1-4, Special Collector's Edition Graphic Novels 4-7
Overall Grade: A+
Type: Action
Storyline: 10
Shinji Ikari, a 14-year-old boy, is summoned by his father to Tokyo-3, to join NERV. This is their first meeting in ten years, when Gendo Ikari abandoned the boy. When Shinji arrives at Tokyo-3, he sees it being attacked by a huge creature, and "Angel." He also sees it being fought by a giant robot, the "Evangelion." He is picked up by Captain Misato Katsuragi, who takes him to NERV HQ, where Shinji learns that his father wanted him to pilot the Eva Unit 01. Despite his hatred of his father and knowing that he could be replaced as a pilot, he reluctantly agrees to pilot the Evangelion. Although he loses consciousness in his first battle, the Eva finishes the battle and destroys the Angel. So starts the tale of Shinji's fight against the Angels, his father, and his own self-hatred that drives the story... and attracts millions of fans worldwide.
Ch. Development: 10
It's basically the entire story. Without Shinji's character development, it would lose the charm that hooked me into the series. Of course, there are probably thousands of people who are just plain annoyed by Shinji, but to you I say, go to Third Impact.
Sexuality: 6
The most extreme it went so far is that one scene with Shinji and Rei in Rei's room.. but if anything it was more awkward than it was sexual. Sadamoto really brings that point out.
Romance: 6
Multiple relationships and triangles, and triangles within triangles that lead to self-destruction... at least in the anime, but at least there are still triangles in the manga.
Drama: 10
Revelations from the past, coping with the past and the present, feelings of betrayal. Let's not forget Shinji's state of mind in all this, and let' s not forget the action.
Action: 6
Actually, there really isn't much in the way of action, despite the robots being there. Most of the series is character development and plot. Action sequences are short.
Comedy: 5
Just like in the anime, there's a lot, especially just slightly after the beginning, but it eventually slows down after a certain point.
Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is the character designer of the anime series, so of course he's the guy you go for for the manga. And the manga is 110% AWESOME!!! Not only is there more character development and less Angels, but there are also key elements that were changed for the sake of impact, such as the fight with Unit 03, the fight against Sachiel, and the days of training with Asuka. The most noticable change in the manga is Ryoji Kaji's increased role in the series, as he is not only a love interest of Asuka and Misato, but also serves as a mentor of sorts to Shinji. Kinda like when he was talking to Shinji when watering watermelons, but all the time.
So, you've watched the anime, and it's shocking, awesome, thought-provoking, etc. But you haven't seen anything until you've read the manga. Of course, the first sentence of this paragraph doesn't apply if you hated the anime series, in which case, you may notice that the manga is better. See? Either way I'm right! The one single drawback is that the manga is produced by Viz, and the time interval between graphic novels is 8-9 months, which is far, far too long a wait. As the saying goes, though, it's worth the wait.
Call it a comic one more time and we know what's for dinner!
