Vampire Princess Miyu (Manga)
Mangas Reviewed: Graphic Novel 1
Overall Grade: A
A welcome change of pace from, well, anything.
Type: Action/Drama
Storyline: 10
Miyu, a vampire chosen to be the one to send stray Shinma back to the realm of darkness where they belong, does her job, but also looks for humans that wish to escape their lives... and sucks their blood to give them a fantasy world that they desire. But Miyu is tortured by the fact that she was human, too. And she also faces the fact that she is the same as the Shinma who take control of human bodies with false promises. How is she to continue in this life when she has doubts about who she is?
Ch. Development: 10
This series is all about how Miyu deals with her own life and how she deals with her past, as well as the stray Shinma that force her to struggle with herself.
Sexuality: 6
Very brief nudity.
Romance: 5
Sometimes her victims are in love with someone. She was once in love when she was human, and she apparently has feelings (or at least says she does) for her partner Larva.
Drama: 8
The way the Shinma seem to be playing with Miyu is tragic, as is her past and her current situation. But the worst is the victims of this war. The humans that turn to Miyu and allow her to give them fantasies... it's very different from what you've been exposed to for so long... that of how it's the easy way out, and that it takes true strength to live. None of that here.
Action: 5
The action is usually less than five panels long. Needless to say, the action isn't a hook.
Comedy: 0
Any surprise in this?
Vampire Princess Miyu is very likely something very different from what you've seen before. There are demons and a vampire, but this story is completely character-driven. What you should be intrested in is if Miyu will gain the strength to do what she wants to do, or if she ever finds happiness. If you read it for the struggle between Miyu and the Shinma... there are currently no signs of any cool battles or even long battles. However, I've only read the first volume, so it could change, though I really hope it doesn't.
Call it a comic one more time and we know what's for dinner!
