Discrimination is a Bad Thing... Yet if Feels so Good!
I'm naturally a very nice, mild-mannered guy, y'know? Sure, I may have a lot to learn about... well, everything, but I know that just because a large group of people doesn't necessarily make it a good thing (though it occaionally is a good thing). What am I talking about this time, you may ask? Well, considering my likely audience, I'm not angering anyone when I say my enemy this time is a horrible ideal that goes by the name: "elitism." dooooommm So, what is elitism? Well, it's perhaps the worst thing in the universe, as it is the unholy combination of arrogance, negative emotion, rudeness, and flawed logic. Elitists tend to think that they are better than others, their opinions are better than others, and that those that do not agree with a certain ideal do not deserve any form of dignity or respect. See also: Nazi.
It has always been my goal to help others. I hope that I have never been an elitist, but when you start to get into this line of work - anime and reviews - you just can't help yourself sometimes. If I have, I must apologize. But unlike others I know, whenever I go on a message board and talk about opinions, I thoroughly explain my opinion and try to protect it rather than state my opinion and attack everyone else in society that doesn't agree. After all, what exactly are you trying to prove? Ideally, you are trying to prove the fact that your opinion is valid in at least some sort of form. What you SHOULD NOT be trying to prove is that your opinion is universal and that everyone who disagrees is an idiot. You don't win friends that way. Only allies. Dark allies. A common salutation for you would be "heil." Gee, I'm just not letting go of that Nazi analogy, am I?
"But this editorial is supposed to be about discrimination! Why are you talking about elitism?" Is that what you are wondering? Well, technically, those two are directly related. I'm about to become five times more serious and may alienate the rest of you who are still reading. This time, I really am 100% guilty. You see, I've been going on and on about anime-style-copying cartoons in the US, about what I should or should not consider anime, and other such stuff. I realized that my disagreeing with their style is just like elitism. I think that I am right and they are stupid for having done this. That's discrimination. That's a sign of elitism. But now I am a changed man (well... young adult). While I will forever feel bitter hatred over Samurai Jack, Totally Spies, and Teen Titans, I understand that they deserve a level of respect. All they were doing was follow the trend of youth and stick with what was as anime as possible, hoping that it would net them big bucks. Sorry fools! You know not what the true essence of anime is! But who am I to judge? After all, American animation can be popular in Japan! So what if the intro to Teen Titans is in Japanese? Well, that's truly weird. If your target audience is the naive youth of America, why make a Japanese intro, which is meant for the Japanese and purist otaku (who would avoid your series like the plague)? Rather than talk down to the creators of Teen Titans, I merely ask questions such as these which analyze the situation. I feel that this is an appropriate course of action that is also peaceful. It is my (futile) hope that others will follow my example from now on.
YamiD50: So, does this mean there will be less of me?
We'll see.
That's my Story and I'm Sticking to it!
