Astro Boy

"Kids aren't supposed to drive hover cars!"
Well DUH!
Episodes Reviewed:
1-5, dubbed, VHS
Overall Grade:
A
Storyline:
8
When Dr. Boynton's son Toby is caught in an accident, he decides to finish his project to create a robot with the looks and thoughts of a human, and decides to make it into the form of his recently deceased son.  Raising a robot son, however, proves to be difficult.  They soon get seperated on a cruise gone awry, and the robot, now named Astro, goes on a variety of adventures.
Type:
Action/Sci-Fi
Ch. Development:
6
Astro and several of his human classmates all learn how to adapt to new situations and discrimination.  Yep, Astro Boy dealt with human-robot discrimination.
Sexuality:
1
Other than a girl robot being undressed (this ain't Chobits - no features), nothing.  Unless, of course, you consider there being something sexual about Astro's infamous "ass-laser."
Romance:
2
A bit of romance in the third or fourth episode.  Yep, Astro Boy also dealt with love between robots.
Drama:
5
Not much in the way of exciting battles, emotion, or tense situations, but combine all the bits and pieces together and you come up with a 5.
Action:
4
Massive explosions.  Gunfire.  And any excuse to say "ass-laser" again.
Comedy:
2
I think there may have been a few funny bits.  That, and by today's standards, the character designs are "laughable."  But then, that's how things were back then.
Dub
B
Dub Voices
5
Whether or not that cheesy VA'ing is on purpose doesn't matter; it's still bad.
Dub Music
5
True to the style of the '70's.  Too bad that means it sucks.
Dub Lines
7
Somehow, the use of cheesy lines is much lower than use of cheesy voices.
Censorship
N/A

Astro Boy is a true classic.  And I'm not saying that just because it was done by Osamu Tezuka, the so-called "God of Manga."  It just so happens that his works tend to be true classics.  But just watch it.  Take into account the time the original concept was created and you see something far ahead of its time.  Sure, it has the cheesy music and action sequences that are reminiscent of old American cartoons, but you'll also see the commentary on robots and souls, emotions, equality, discrimination, life, death, loss, etc.  Truly a work that belongs to time.  I really can't push it much farther than this.  Suck it up and watch it.  Ass-laser.

That's my Story and I'm Sticking to it!
