Pokemon
Episodes Reviewed: 1-current, WB dub
Overall Grade:B+
It's fun, it's pokemon, it adds to the original RPG story, it doesn't copy off anything (other than the game), and, unlike DBZ, it doesn't feel like dragging on despite the 100+ episodes!
Storyline: 6
Adds to a gameboy story, but it's a good addition.
Genre: Action / Comedy
I shouldn't have to say anything here.
Ch. Development: 7
With 100+ eps., there's plenty of time!
Sexuality: 2
1) A single perv. 2) A cross-dressing villain.
Romance: 3
Mostly implied
Drama: 4
Mostly "bye-bye pokemon" crap
Action: 5
Mostly blood-free pokemon battling... Gawd I wish it were based on the manga... you don't know? They actually bleed!
Comedy: 8
Just watch it- you'll understand.
Dub
Dub Voices:
Okay, I guess
Dub Music:
They just HAD to put in some american music where it wasn't accepted.
Dub Lines:
Why did these guys feel like adding to the whole Ash/Satoshi and Misty/Kasumi quasi-relationship thing? If they left it just the way it was meant, everything would still work out and none of the humor would be sacrificed.
Censorship:
One of the funniest things I've ever seen was cut, during some attacks, the screen is darkened, and two episodes were not shown. Also, WB! cut out some stuff that was aired before, such as one of Brock's more suggestive lines, "She can violate my rights any time!" I can't believe that actually made it to local TV!
This anime was created for the sole purpose of squeezing money out of the pocket monsters franchise. The anime proved to be quite entertaining, but it would be more entertaining if they didn't mess with it so much and left in some of the funnier moments and left in more japanese music and kept the original soundtrack in the movies and left the japanese lines alone for the most part.
This is about the boy named Satoshi/Ash who plans to become a pokemon master. He is joined by Misty and Brock and is often attacked by Team Rocket, who try to capture his Pikachu, but they always lose ending in a humorous way. It's basically a lot of fun and humor and you shouldn't take it too seriously, EVER. Do so and you might end up like me circa late 1998. With over 100 episodes, you'd think the story might drag-on and drag-on forever, but it doesn't feel boring like that. Sure it's easy to compare with DBZ (That's right, Pokemon can compare with DBZ), but Pokemon doesn't have those cool climaxes that happen in the DBZ world, but then again, DBZ feels like it drags on and on too long, especially in the Freezer saga. No Super-Saiya-jin here, but it's somewhat cool when those pokemon evolve, no? Right... no.
*Update* It's been about a year or so since I last updated the ol' Pokemon review. By now you know that the series does in fact drag on needlessly, with most of the episodes being an episode about how our heroes help out a random stranger, with similar consequences. It's still amazing, though how some of those episodes can still seem fresh and funny, while others sound like they've been repeated before. With the advent of the "Pokemon Advanced" series, the series finally gets a much needed change of pace when a new character is introduced and two main characters are ditched. The new Team Magma and Team Aqua also ought to add to the villain list, as the Team Rocket was getting old... too old. Maybe eventually they actually will starve to death...
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
