Retractable roofs have become the latest rage in baseball stadium design.
Since summer humidity is not a problem in central Arizona, not all of BOB's field and seating areas are air-conditioned. (An 8,000-ton cooling system is designed to lower the temperature in some seating areas and concourses.)
Instead, the roof is used to keep the sun off the stands and concrete structure during the 100-degree-plus summer days, and is sometimes opened at night to allow air circulation and heat loss to the desert sky.
To enable the grass to survive, the roof is not totally closed during daylight hours, but is operated to create a moving band of sun on the field to permit photosynthesis.
At least on paper, this sounds more workable than the Astrodome's unsuccessful experiment with growing grass indoors.
Taking a cue from minor-league parks that feature hot tubs overlooking the field, BOB has a swimming pool in the outfield.
Situated not far from downtown Phoenix and the airport, BOB is located a block away from the America West Arena, and, curiously, the park itself looks similar to a basketball or hockey facility.
