Cardinal Stadium will be the home of the Chicago Fire in 2002, subject to Naperville City Council approval in February. Cardinal Stadium is located on the campus of North Central College in Naperville, IL. The Fire is expanding the existing facility to be an intimate, exciting, soccer-friendly venue with capacity of 15,000. Fire fans can expect friendly customer service and top-quality stadium amenities. Tailgating and/or consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited on the grounds of North Central College.
The stands look out over a first-class playing field where SafePlay Plus synthetic grass was installed last summer. North Central's football, soccer and running teams have been competing there since 1999. In May 2000, North Central hosted the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which the Cardinal men earned their fifth national title. North Central sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports and Cardinal teams have won 22 national championships.
The new stadium facilities, made possible by the generosity of many graduates and Naperville residents -- especially Jay and Dot Buikema and North Central alumni Dick Wehrli and Al Benedetti -- replace an earlier, bleacher structure that suffered damage during the July 1996 "hundred-year flood" that ravaged many parts of Naperville.
