When ground was broken on July 22, 1997, for the new home of the Indiana Pacers, it was done to provide a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment facility to take the Pacers, the City of Indianapolis and the State of Indiana into the next century. But it was also done with a respectful look and in honor of Indiana’s rich basketball tradition.
From the outside, the simple, red brick, limestone and concrete exterior lead to a vast, barrel-vault roof similar to traditional fieldhouses. Glass walls at the top of Conseco Fieldhouse allow a view of the city skyline from inside the seating bowl. Inside the nostalgic look are sponsor pavilions, concession stands and signage. Combine those elements with memorabilia and Conseco Fieldhouse is the world’s first fully themed professional sports and entertainment venue, according to the building’s design firm, Ellerbe Becket Sports and Entertainment.
Spectators find plenty of room and action, both as they tour the concourses and sit in one of the 18,500 seats in the Fieldhouse. Concourses are 24 feet, sometimes expanding to 60 feet as compared to Market Square Arena’s 14-foot average and a wide point of 18 feet. There are approximately 18 to 20 seats between aisles, compared to MSA’s 26 seats, allowing easier access. Seats are at least 1 inch wider than those in MSA.
