The ground breaking for Gund Arena took place in April of 1992 and it took two and a half years to build the facility. Gund Arena officially opened its doors to the public on October 17, 1994 with Billy Joel as the grand opening performer.
Gund Arena and next door neighbor Jacobs Field (home to the Cleveland Indians) comprise the Gateway Sports and Entertainment Complex. This project marked the first time in the country that two sports facilities were constructed simultaneously on the same site.
Gund Arena is home to the National Basketball Association's Cleveland Cavaliers, the Women's National Basketball Association's Cleveland Rockers, the American Hockey League's Cleveland Barons and the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Men's & Women's Championship Tournaments.
Each year Gund Arena hosts more than 2 million people who attend close to 200 events including CAVS and Rockers basketball, world-class concerts,spectacular family shows and signature sporting events.
