Although possessing architectural distinctions appropriate to the team and its community, Heinz Field will incorporate operational and customer-friendly features proven effective in other recently built National Football League facilities.
The building's designed capacity of 65,000 - with opportunity for later expansion - 7,000 club seats and 120 suites is in accord with the market's size and the team's strong appeal.
And the design's inclusion of VIP parking areas, customer lounges, sponsor entertainment areas, an indoor theater, dual scoreboards, and extensive advertising and promotional inventory underscore the facility's capability to generate revenue well beyond basic ticket and concession income. Similarly, the campus footprint provides for an organized tailgate area, "Steelers Experience" sports pavilion, retail and restaurant space.
The design for Heinz Field was inspired by elements integral to Pittsburgh and its people. The open south end of the stadium creates a connection between the stadium and downtown; the city becomes part of the game day experience. Game day energy is not restricted to the stadium - events and people flow through the facility via the plaza. The new stadium echoes Pittsburgh's rich heritage ensures a strong connection between the city's urban character and one of its newest landmarks.
Heinz Field is also the new home field for the University of Pittsbugh Panthers. Pittsburgh is excited to have its football all focused into one area.
While Heinz Field proved a successful venue for the Steelers on the field in its inaugural season, the stadium was receiving national acclaim for its design off the field. The structual engineering company, Bliss & Nyitray Inc., earned a grand award in the 2002 National Engineering Excellence Award for the structual design of Heinz Field.
