It would be incorrect to refer to the New Oakland-Alameda County Arena as "renovated," even though an effort was made to preserve substantial portions of the exterior glass wall which was erected in 1964. But as the $105 million project neared completion, it became clear that the Warriors’ new home is just that: a new home.
With the exception of preserving portions of the old arena’s exterior shell, the demolition process was thorough. The concrete seating bowl, the concourses and even the concrete floor at the event level were demolished and the interior was excavated several feet below its previous elevation. Even the foundation system was modified, with the addition of nearly 800 concrete piles driven 90 feet below the surface to support an array of new concrete beams and footers.
The old arena, which, prior to its demolition was the smallest in the NBA, has given way to one of the largest first class venues in the nation. With more than 19,000 fully upholstered seats, the new Warriors Arena is nearly 30% larger than the old facility. In addition to a larger capacity, the new Warriors Arena has five circulation concourses and a multi-decked design which brings a large proportion of the seating closer to the floor for improved sight lines.
Along with the increased seating capacity, the new Warriors Arena boasts three upscale private clubs, 72 luxury suites and state-of-the-art audio and video systems. In fact, when the new Warriors Arena opened on November 8, 1997, it became the only arena in North America with eight high resolution full color video boards. Beneath the portable basketball floor, an NHL regulation ice floor capable of making ice in a matter of hours adds to the arena’s ability to host virtually every form of indoor sporting and entertainment event imaginable.
The project’s schedule and budget are equally impressive when compared to contemporary arena developments in other cities which typically require nearly $200 million and three years to complete. In contrast, the new Warriors Arena was designed and constructed in less than 15 months at a cost, including all professional fees and soft costs, of less than $110 million. And by keeping the project on a fast-track schedule, the Warriors needed to play only a single season at an alternate facility.
