The new home of the Cincinnati Bengals officially opened for business on August 19, 2000, after a half-dozen years of politicking, red tape, voter frustration and budget overruns brought the final cost of the city's most expensive public works project to $453 million. The stadium encompasses 40 acres of heated natural turf and seats 65,600 avid fans. Its most distinctive architectural signature is an 88,000-square-foot Teflon canopy perched atop the structure. The stadium was named for Paul Eugene Brown, the founder of the Cleveland Browns and the coach who brought pro football to Cincinnati when he founded the Bengals in 1967. Brown was the team's general manager until his death in 1991; his son Mike continues the family tradition and currently runs the team.
Digital City Cincinnati
Opened in 2000, this 65,6000-seat facility is a pace-setter in sports experience through its striking architecture, unrivalled fans amenities and dramatic setting on the downtown Cincinnati riverfront.
Paul Brown Stadium has already won a major architectural award and has been a catalyst for Cincinnati's "Rebirth of the Riverfront." It is the first completed project, forming the western bookend of an area to be bordered on the east by a new Reds baseball stadium.
In May 1998, Paul Brown Stadium was one of 15 projects selected for an American Architecture Award. There were more than 300 entries from both the United States and overseas, and Paul Brown Stadium was the only stadium among the winners.
Though hailed for its futuristic design, the stadium's primary purpose is to serve as a premier venue for watching football. Almost 70 percent of the seats will be along the sidelines, positioned for superior sight lines to the field.
The new stadium also carries a crucial link to the past. In an era when many new stadiums and arenas carry corporate names in payment for naming rights fees, the new Cincinnati stadium bears the name of the late Paul Brown, the Pro Football Hall of Famer who capped an already glorious career by bringing pro football to Cincinnati in 1968 as Bengals founder, general manager and head coach.
