The United Center, home of the Chicago Blackhawks (National Hockey League) and Chicago Bulls (National Basketball Association), represents the 21st century in sports & entertainment. The building cost $175 million and was privately funded by the United Center Joint Venture, which is headed by Mr. William Wirtz (owner of the Chicago Blackhawks), and Mr. Jerry Reinsdorf (majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls).
Construction was begun in April of 1992, and the ribbon cutting ceremony was held on August 18th, 1994. The first "private" event, a fund-raiser for Chicago '96, the bi-partisan welcoming committee that brought the 1996 Democratic National Convention to Chicago and the United Center, was also held on the 18th. The first "public" event was the World Wrestling Federation's Summerslam which was held on August 29th, 1994. Since our opening, the United Center has hosted over 200 events annually including the 1996 Democratic National Convention, Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Eric Clapton, Elton John, The Who, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey, Disney On Ice, The Inaugural Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament, The Great Eight Classic, DePaul College Basketball, and the John Hancock Tour of World Figure Skating Champions.
