ENTERS IN First Slayers season

Sylphiel is the sweet cleric that enters the Slayers story during the first season while Lina, Gourry and Amelia first arrive in Sairaag and are arguing about how they will find out who's put the bounty on their heads.  Sylphiel overhears them and recognizes Gourry, who she is very glad to see.  It seems Gourry accidentally saved Sairaag from destruction once, getting wounded in the process, and Sylphiel tended to him until he got well.  Gourry doesn't remember her very well, just remembers she's a great cook.  Sylphiel takes the trio to her father, Eruk, a well-known priest of Flagoon, the holy tree that grows in Sairaag.

Eruk is stunned to see the Dragon Spooker, Lina Inverse with Gourry, who he'd always considered a kind, gentle, and intelligent soul (I think this was Sylphiel's influence...)  They talk for a while and then leave.  Sylphiel rejoins the group later... only to have her life changed irrevocably...

Sylphiel is a very sensitive girl--not a crybaby.  She can accurately discern people's emotions and intents, and since her heart is so kind, she often empathizes with them to the point that she seems weak.  Fanfiction has unfortunately contributed to this deterioration of her true character.  When most authors bother to mention Sylphiel at all, she's in the background the entire time, calling out "Gourry dear" and being unnaturally dense.  Sylphiel is far from dense.  She was raised in a shrine, however, so she's a bit of a shut-in.  And that's not her fault, and it can and DID definitely change with time.

Sylphiel is hurt somewhat easily, it seems.  She hates to see anyone in pain, and finds Lina's way of showing affection to Gourry disturbing, constantly asking if he's okay.  She finds it hard to comprehend that Gourry honestly doesn't mind Lina's violence and accepts her as she is.  Since she is so sensitive to others, it's only natural that some of that sensitivity shows in herself.  Zelgadis's callous remarks hurt her extremely, even if they are true.  Of course it's never nice to tell someone that they're 'just letting Koppii get away with murder' right after your entire neighborhood has been blown to smithereens...

She cares very deeply for her friends.  She will protect them at any cost, even sacrificing her life if it is necessary.  She is much better at healing than protecting, though.  Sylphiel has mastered Recovery, which can bring a person (or magical tree!) back from the brink of death to their full fighting power.  Without her healing magic, there wouldn't be a second half of Slayers, OR a Slayers NEXT, and TRY, because several important people would be DEAD.  Yes, that's right, I'm giving Sylphiel full credit for defeating Koppii Rezo.  No matter how powerful Lina and her friends were, without Sylphiel's spell on Flagoon to bind Koppii to the tree, they most likely would all have died. Or Lina would have used the Giga Slave and they'd have all died any ways. ::shrug::  She's a very important part of the team!  Every team needs a healer, especially with Lina there... er, I didn't say that...

Now Sylphiel isn't ALL flowers and sunshine.  She has a wild side and a temper, which only come out occasionally, and mainly at villains.  One of my favorite scenes is Sylphiel threatening to use 'sex appeal' on Hellmaster Phibrizzo!  In the novels, Sylphiel had to be held back from attacking Koppii for destroying her home.  So she WILL use violence if there's no other alternative... or if she's just having a bad day.
