NEWS AND NOTES
Updated 09/03/01
-I'm hard at work completing the look at all the positions, and should complete a position or two a day. I have info on catchers, first baseman , right-handed starters middle infielders, third basemen and outfielders as of today. Coming next will be a look at left-handed starters and right-handed relievers.
-Rosters for the 2001 Arizona Fall League have been announced and the Tribe has six players scheduled to play with the Scottsdale Scorpions. Left-handed pitchers Jason Stanford and Carl Sadler, catcher Josh Bard, shortstop Zach Sorenson, outfielder Alex Requena and one more player to be announced later will participate.
-The Indians have reached an impasse with their 2nd pick in the 2001 draft, right-hander Alan Horne. Horne will began classes at Mississippi Monday which means the Indians cannot sign him. Horne will now be ineligible for the draft for 3 years. Cleveland will be awarded a sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds in 2002 for failing to sign Horne. The Indians, according to recent reports, will attempt to use the money they would have paid Horne to attempt to sign some late round picks that have been difficult going so far.
-The Indians have signed their 18th round pick, high school right-hander T J Burton out of Canada and their 36th round pick, outfielder Jose Cruz, an 18 year old outfielder from Metropolitan University in Puerto Rico. They also signed non-drafted free agent catcher David Wallace from Vanderbilt.
- Cleveland has signed its 22nd round pick, high school right-hander Jimmy Schultz from Texas. Schultz will report to the Indians Instructional League.
- With the Major League's roster limit expanded to 40 from 25 as of September 1st, the Indians have brought up Ryan Drese, Tim Drew, John McDonald, Dave Roberts, Scott Radinsky, Tim Laker and Karim Garcia. Drese picked up a win in his 1st major league start Saturday and Garcia hit 2 homers in The Tribe's loss to Chicago on Sunday.
- Talk about a big jump: Lee Gronkiewicz moved up to Akron (AA) from Burlington (Adv Rookie); Chris Cooper arrived in Akron from Mahoning Valley (short season A).
