"The Black Douglas" or "the Good Sir James". He was the greatest of Bruce's captains in the War of Independence. He was killed fighting against the Moors in Spain carrying the heart of Rober the Bruce on a crusade as he had promised. He seems neveer to have married but had at least three natural sons, William (1st Earl), James (2nd Earl) and Archibald the Grim (3rd Earl). |
