Dunadd is one of the oldest if not the oldest stronghold in Argyll. It overlooks the plains of Knapdale around Kilmartin from the rock on which it was build making use of the natura rocky surface.
There is a stone just as the lia fail - the stone of Destiny - on which the ancient gaelic kings of Dal Riata, then the name of what we know as Argyll (= land of the gael) were crowned. The stone shows a footprint, some ogham-letters and a carving of a boar. The stone can be seen in the picture below (3rd from left).
Not much of the dun itself is left but the rocks that supported it's defence.
The name Dunadd means fort on the river Add and indeed the river is very near by.
Further information about the dun is e. g. provided at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunadd.
