Dunrobin Castle, lying on a natural hill upon the seaside goes back to about 1400. It is the residence of the Earls of Sutherland. Its modern appearance was constructed between the 17th and 19th century, the heavy north-east tower with its four pepperpot-towers is 500 years old, the basement dating from the 13th century.
Dunrobin Castle belongs to the most impressive Castles of Scotland although due to its various enlargements during the centuries there is no unity in its style of architecture. Enlargements of the 19th century were made by Sir James Barrie, the constructor of the Houses of Parliament in London. The garden arrangements in Versailles-style is also of 19th century times.
The Castle contains important art collections (paintings, tapisseries, period furniture etc.), a collection of uniforms and court wear and collections of local history means.
