Fort Augustus

Fort Augustus - the locks Fort Augustus - the locks

Fort Augustus was built at the western end of Loch Ness on purpose to control the western way from and into the highlands.

It proves to be impossible to avoid Fort Augustus if going to the northern shore of Loch Ness as Fort Autustus lies at the western end the loch in Gleann Mhor (the great glen). There is a lot of water in the great glenn, loch Lochy, loch Oich, loch Ness, the Moray firth and thus there are not many spots to cross the great glen on dry land. Fort Augustus is one of them lying in the middle of the great glen.

The caledonian canal which links the lochs from the west coast to the east coast meets Loch Ness at Fort Augustus and boats have to be lowered from the higher level of Loch Oich to the lower level of Loch Ness via fivefold locks, just two less than Neptune's staircase near Fort William.

This site is yet to be developed... please come back later, I have some photographs and a bit of history to tell but not yet uploaded owing to maintenance works on the entire website...
