Strome Castle was built in the 15th century. It was originally part of the ancient Earldom of Ross, which was taken over by the Macdonalds, Lords of the Isles. Celestine, younger son of Alexander, 3rd Lord of the Isles and 11th Earl of Ross in the heritage of his mother gave the castle and lands in 1472 to Allan Cameron of Lochiel. The transaction was in 1495 confirmed by James IV but in 1539 the royal charter was revoked by James V and the castle given to Macdonald of Glengarry. From 1539 until 1602 there was great trouble in securing the possession of Strome Castle as it was for several times attacked and besieged finally by MacKenzie of Kintail.
Kenneth Mackenzie once again laid siege to the castle He was about to withdraw when something decisive happened. Some women went out to the well to draw some water. When they returned they were shivering with fear and in the dim light not properly seeing anything they accidentally poured the water over the gunpowder thus virtually disarming the Macdonalds. When the defenders came to fill up their ammunition they saw the mess and the women were loudly shouted at and cursed. Some Mackenzie prisoner heard this and on escape to his own camp he gave the news to Kenneth, his clan chief.
Mackenzie of Kintail instantly attacked the castle and the MacDonalds offered surrender under condition of safe conduct for life and baggage. This was granted and the castle subsequently blown up by Mackenzie. It has never been rebuilt.
In 1939 it was presented to the National Trust.
