The name Tarbert or in gaelic an Tairbeart means a narrow place which is indeed to be found at Tarbert where the Irish Sea almost meets the Inner Sound and just misses it by some 3000ft.
Tarbert Castle commands the bay on the Inner Sound. There is not much left of the castle itself but if you climb up the hill you have a nice view over the bay of Tarbert.
Some nice old photographs can be found on http://www.tarbert-castle.co.uk/.
Stonefield Castle is a Hotel today, it lies near Tarbert at the lochside of Loch Fyne.
