The following picnic areas are located within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) Federal Park lands in San Francisco and in Marin County. For more information on entry fees (if any), and directions to these picnic areas, telephone the Marin Headlands Visitor Center (415) 331-1540:
Baker Beach:
Tucked behind the cypress tress at the east end of the parking lot is a pleasant picnic area with tables and grills.
Battery Wallace:
This picnic area near the Point Bonita trail head is oe of the most scenic picnic spots in the entire GGNRA, offering visitors tables and grills overlooking the Golden Gate Bride. This picnic site has no water.
East Fort Baker:
The grassy parade ground and coastal bluffs of East Fort Baker make quiet picnic spots out of the wind. Those who prefer picnic tables will find them near the Lime Point parking area and on East Road.
Fort Mason:
The Great Meadow. This picnic area offers grassy hilltops and hollows for picnicking, sunbathing, walking and sports with views from the meadow of the San Francisco's hilly skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Mount Tamalpais:
There are two drive-in picnic areas on Mount Tamalpais, the Bootjack Camp picnic area is located at a pleasant, wooded, and shady site off the Panoramic Highway just east of Pan Toll Ranger Station. It has Bar-B-Que pits, picnic tables, rest rooms and running water. The East Peak picnic area lies in a sunny and shady site at the end of East Ridgecrest Boulevard. It offers the same picnicking facilities as Bootjack Camp except there are no Bar-B-Que pits. No fires are allowed at East Peak.
Muir Woods:
Homestead Valley is a great place to go. Open 24 hours a day for picnickers, dog walkers, and late nighters, it's especially suitable for flying model airplanes and star-gazing away from city lights. Other good spots for picnicking are Muir Beach and Muir Beach Overlook.
Muir Beach is a sheltered picnic area next to Muir Beach Lagoon and offers Bar-B-Que grills, tables and rest rooms.
Rodeo Valley:
Rodeo Pond picnic area on the east side of the car bridge across Rodeo Lagoon are some picnic tables and toilets.
Rodeo Beach picnic area just off the Rodeo Beach parking area overlooks the beach. The site's tables, grills, water, and toilets are all wheelchair accessible.
Stinson Beach:
This picnic area is extensive with tables and Bar-B-Que grills. For those who forget their picnic baskets, there's a snack bar at the base of the main lifeguard tower. The adjacant town of Stinson Beach Community offers several nice restaurants, a small grocery store, and a handful of shops.
West Fort Miley:
Offers visitors a grassy picnic area among three turn-of-the-century gun emplacements and a splendid view of Ocean Beach. Visitors should park in the Vista Point parking lot, walk back along El Camino Del Mar Road, and take the first road to the left uphill.
