Chapter 15: Kaettekitazo..?

The figure nodded slowly, acknowledging Theresa's disbelieving exclamation. He jumped down into the ditch. He landed on his hands and knees in the unstable turf, grunting.
He shook his head and pushed himself to his feet. He was shorter than Zoffy, but similar in appearance, with only a few differences. "I'm not accustomed to this small body.." he muttered apologetically.
Zoffy looked at him quizzically. "Jack, what are you doing here? We heard no word of anyone on the way."
Jack nodded. "I know, we can't discuss it out here, regrettably. No way of telling whose ears we're landing upon. I do believe that part of the story won't be new to you, though."
He looked up at the sky, momentarily keeping his gaze on the bright, pure light of one single star which outshone all the rest. He then looked directly at Theresa, a serious look in his large yellow eyes.
Theresa looked back, quizzically. Suddenly, 5 ambulences flew by at high speed, illuminating the three of them, deafening sirens blaring.
Theresa broke the mutual stare she and Jack shared and looked after the ambulences, which were headed toward downtown.
"The battle caused damage to the city. Word has it that an ambulence carrying a patient was destroyed." Jack said quietly, meaning dripping from every word. He then turned away from the two, and put his right hand on his left shoulder. He swiped his arm downward, and a slight glow covered his body.
When the glow disappeared, Jack was gone, and a tall, lanky man with a bloody gash in the back of his head stood in his place. Theresa and Zoffy gasped in unison, Theresa leaping backward. He turned around, and his eyes were blood red and glassy. He looked at them a moment and then fell face forward in the dirt.
Theresa and Zoffy stared at him, then at each other.
"Well." Zoffy said.
"Yeah." Theresa echoed the sentiment.
They looked back at him, then back at each other, and then they sighed, bending over the man.
"I really wish he could have waited until we got back to MEU to do that.." Zoffy muttered.
