Tao first appeared in Image Comics' flagship title, WildC.A.T.s. His name is actually an acronym for Tactically Augmented Organism. A genetic construct of the Optigen group of laboratories, he grew up in a giant test tube without any human emotional contact.

He was recruited into Savant and Majestic's team of WildCATs, serving as their strategist and technical expert. Savant fell head over heels in love with him, but he later turned out to be a manipulative, treacherous weasel. He plunged the city into a criminal gang war, and in the process got Condition Red, Savant, Ladytron and Fuji seriously injured.
