Hate Crimes (9/20/99)
In recent years the United States Congress and many state legislatures of adopted a new category of crime into the criminal code. The laws are regarding acts against a specific group of people, namely minorities, women, homosexuals, and transgendered individuals. It specifically categories acts of violence against these groups as "hate crimes". The term conjures up the Orwellian phrases of "Sex Crime" and "Thought Crime". One must wonder what is considered a "love crime"?
We oppose this legislation and any further derisive laws that provide for a special group of people. Murder is a crime that should be punished to the fullest extent of the law (except maybe in the case of the writers for Three's Company, society might turn a blind eye). The life of any individual is no more valuable than any others. As a Nation, do we need to be reminded of the phrase "...all men a created equal." Is the life anyone's son or daughter worth less than than that of Joe the flaming hairdresser's? Is the life anyone's son or daughter worth less than than that of any other minority group? ...NO! So why should we pass harsher penalties for act of violence against them?
One of the principle short comings of our democracy is it's innate maternalistic instinct. We feel that if the government will just do something...anything, we can right any wrong. The sad fact is it can't. The government can pass a myriad of dumb legislation (for examples see http://www.dumblaws.com) like the hate crimes laws, but the change has to be made internally. We as individuals must change, and that's a lot harder than writing laws.
