Akela

After Kerry died, I was really broken up. My parents refused to let me get another dog. But I knew I really wanted one! One night, we went up to the SPCA to foster a trio of kittens. As my mother and two sisters piccked out the cats, I looked at the dogs that were up for adoption. I saw a lovely Siberian Husky. I commented on it, and my mom just said," We're not getting a dog!"

But I was not defeated yet. That Saturday, I took my dad out for breakfast and told him about the dog. I also made a proposition about adopting the dog, and how I would take care of it. Dad gave his concerns about me getting a dog, but I rebuttled with my proposal. He somewhat agreed. He had planned to take my mom out on a "date" that afternoon, and when they got home my mom asked me to look up on the Internet "Temperament of Siberian Huskiess" & Greyhounds. I was so excited! I had made an impression!

On Sunday, after reading up about Sibes, I wrote a long letter, proposition, and contract, as to how I would take care of the dog. I left it on the kitchen table, and when I got home after school the envelope had been opened. My mother had come home and read it. I went out with my friend Mike, because he needed to buy some RAM for his computer. WHen I got home later, both of my parents were gone, and my sister wasn't allowed to tell me why. I knew it had to be something about the dog! When they got home later that evening, they had some bad news for me. They had agreed to let me get the dog, but when they went to the SPCAC he had already been adopted. I was so sad and depressed I stayed in my room and moped around the house all night.

I called SPCA's and shelters for over a week, until I found Star, a 4 1/2 year old female husky. I called my mom at work and the two of us went to see her. She was beautiful! Skinny, but she could be fed and beefed up a bit. Our only concern was her reaction to a cat, since we also have one. We filled out the adoption form, but there was a prior arrangement that I had to be to, so we couldn't stay for the adoption interview. We later learned that they had tested Star with a cat, and she attacked it. So we could not adopt her.

My mom felt kind of bad about Star, so she did a search on the Internet that night and found a few huskies up for adoption around Ontario. That's where we found Mickey! He was a 1 1/2 year old male. But he was a LONG ways away, so we agreed to drive to see him on Saturday, October 4th. I called on Friday afternoon to get directions, and also to see if he was still at the shelter. They said that they would hold him there until 12:00pm, in time for us to drive there and see him.

He was beautiful! He is black and white, with gray along his sides and tail, with a little white tip at the end of his tail. He has lovely brown eyes, white teeth, and a pink tongue. He is large, but also 11 pounds lighter than he was in June of this year. After walking him around for a few minutes and talking about him with the kennel staff, I paid for him. $80. Yay! I finally had a dog! The car ride home was fun. He must have been very nervous about driving with us because he was shedding so much! It was like flying fur-balls everywhere!

After we got him home, my mom stole him for a quick walk. She told me a good way of walking him, so I took him out to see my friend Mike, and then to the comic shop where I buy comics. He was VERY interested in thedealer's Sheltie, and she, being very old, fell over several times in attempts to get away from him. HEH! Silly pup! He walks very well, and does not tug at all. I just hold onto the end of the leash and let him have his room, and he stays at his end of the leash.

He eventually met my gramma, and other grandparents, and a friend from school came to meet him too. I took him into school on Wednesday (yesterday) and took a few pictures with the digital camera. I also made a quick rm movie, which will be online soon! Here are the pictures I took:

As you can see, he is very beautiful!

My poor puppy also got Kennel Cough. We got him some medication, but he doesn't like it, and is now not eating for fear of getting a pill! Silly puppy! He went from a cough and throwing up foamy saliva, to coughing and spitting, and now he just has a dry cough. Poor pup! But the medication appears to be helping him a lot! I hate to leave him alone, but we're going away for thanksgiving this weekend (Canadian Thanksgiving, October 11). My sister is staying home though, so he won't be alone at all.

All in all, I think he is the best dog ever! I have never had my OWN dog before, and he is great! Like all huskies, they establish the hierarchy in the family. Right now he knows that I am "master", and he bows hs head and puts his ears back in submission. He takes food and treats very gently, mostly with his tongue, and even ate a cookie right from my mouth. Yes yes, they taste good! Every dog owner should be able to eat their dog's cookies! Sheesh! He also sleeps in my room and obeys my commands, and if he doesn't I get mean on him and he whines like a baby. I have heard him howl once, but apparently he has done it twice so far.

I'm glad you were able to meet Akela! Say bye now! Howwlll!
