THE

SOUNDTRACK

The music from Balto was
composed and conducted by James Horner who also did movies like
Apollo 13, The Man Without A Face, and TITANIC. Not only was I
was really cheesed that the soundtrack was only available on CD
(I only had one CD player at the time: my dad's CD ROM) but it
cost me $25!!! Nevertheless, I bought it anyway. Now that I have
my OWN computer in my room I can blast my Balto ST through the
house with my 100 WATT speakers. Here's what you'll find on the
soundtrack...
This is the song played at the end of the movie (the long version; track 13, is the ACTUAL one played during the credits, though)
This one is at the very beginning and goes on until Steele and his team have crashed the other sled team and are running towards Nome.
This is where Steele comes around a corner in Nome and makes his way down the home stretch (or NOME stretch. Heh heh!) Rosy's hat blows out of her hand and Balto rescues it.
This begins when Muk & Luk race to the shoreline, after which Boris tells them that they're not drowning because the "TIDE IS OUT!!" Boris meets Balto on his boat and asks him about Jenna. Balto decides to go see Jenna; who is waiting outside the hospital. Jenna is upset because Rosy is sick and she doesn't know what is wrong. Balto takes her to the side of the hospital and opens a door that leads to the boiler room.
This is where Balto is carrying Boris through town to see the end of the dogsled race (why they didn't just put the tracks in order is beyond me!)
This one starts with the race to see who the fastest dog is, and ends when the telegraph message reaches Nome that Steele's team is lost.
This track is the music during the entire grizzly bear attack, and the few moments afterwards.
This track begins after the grizzly bear attack. Jenna is injured and is taken back to Nome by Boris, Muk & Luk while Balto continues on alone. The track ends when Balto finds the lost sled team.
This track plays in the movie when Steele and Balto have the fight over the medicine (actually I wouldn't really call it a fight). After Steele falls down the cliff Balto takes the team and Steele vows to get even. He wrecks Balto's trail and causes the team to go the wrong way. Balto and the medicine fall off a cliff and the track ends.
Another out-of-place track; this one takes place when Balto and the others are leaving Nome to try to find the lost sled team. The track ends when Steele and his team slide down the steep icy slope and crash at the bottom.
My personal favorite; the track begins as Jenna accuses Steele of lying about Balto's death. She then leaves and makes a Northern Lights effect on the side of a nearby mountain using a lantern and a pile of broken bottles. Balto has dug himself out of the snow and now faces a majestic white wolf. Balto turns away, ashamed, and sees the medicine lying in the snow. He feels new strength welling up inside him and he howls to bring back the wolf. They both howl and Balto climbs up the cliff, gets the team back in order, and they begin the final leg of their journey back to Nome.
This one is kind of self explanitory. Balto arrives safely at Nome and the children are saved.
This is the actual song played during the credits. I have a MIDI of the song that you can play and sing alone if you want!
Just a few selections that I wish were on the soundtrack...
The music where the telegraph messages are being sent back and forth between Nome and the other towns. I know the music is played during track 8 but it's not the whole thing.
The music where the sled team, now under Balto's leadership, is chased by the avalanche and then rained on by the stalactites inside the ice cave.
