| Balto |
Wolf/husky |
Browish-gray |
Brown |
Balto is the rejected dog
in Nome. All of the other dogs hate him and the humans
don't think very highly of him either. His only friends
are Boris, a Russian snow goose, and the two polar bears
Muk and Luk. He is in love with Jenna, one of the more
popular dogs in Nome who is also sought after by the evil
malamute, Steele. After Balto rescued the lost sled team
and brought the medicine back to Nome he was proclaimed a
hero. No longer shunned he is now loved by all. |

Boris is a pessemistic old
snow goose who is a friend of Balto's. He spends his time
trying to keep Balto out of trouble, but the young
wolf-dog is often too much to handle! Although he truly
loves Muk and Luk, he finds them annoying at times,
especially when they hug him, lick him, and call him
"Uncle Boris". His keen mind often comes up
with deep philosophical phrases such as," A dog
cannot make this journey alone. But, maybe a wolf
can." |
| Muk &
Luk |
Polar Bears |
White and
Cream |
Black |
Muk and Luk are the twin
brothers who are Balto's friends. Muk is the smaller and
older of the two, while Luk is larger but cannot speak.
Rather, his hummings and mumblings are translated through
Muk, who has mastered the art of speech. The two often
join Balto on his many adventures along with "Uncle
Boris"! |
| Jenna |
Siberian
Husky |
Rust/Cream |
Fiery

Jenna is the most
beautiful dog in Nome, or at least Balto and Steele think
so. She is kind and friendly and can see the true sides
of people. Although the town of Nome hates Balto because
they think him a dangerous wolf hybrid, Jenna sees that
Balto is truly a good dog and wishes to be his friend.
She gets her chance one night as Balto helps her to see
how her girl Rosy is doing in the hospital. After that
they became good friends. |
| Steele |
Alaskan
Malamute |
Charcoal/White |
Blue |
Steele is the nasty
malamute who acts like a tough guy all the time. He
spends most of his time bullying those dogs who are
weaker than him, especially Balto. Along with his
three-dog gang he sems to rule the dog world of Nome. He
has his eyes on Jenna and makes several advances on her,
but is turned down every time. The leader of the dogsled
team, Steele is arrogant and will never admit when he
goes the wrong way. After being defeated by Balto when
the wolf/dog came to rescue the team he returned to Nome
and is later dumped by the other dogs when they realize
that he had lied to them... as well as on several other
occasions. |
| Nikki |
Chow-Chow |
Brown |
Black |
Nikki is one of the dogs
in Steele's gang. He speaks with an accent and often ends
his sentances with the word," 'dere." He is
rather bulky and likes to hang out with Kaltag and Star,
but is actually a very nice dog. He is merely under
Steele's influence and therefore is mean to the other
dogs. In reality he dislikes Steele, and once said behind
his back," That son of a..." |
| Kaltag |
Siberian
Husky |
Brown and
Tan |
Black |
Kaltag is the brain of
Steele's gang. He often praises Steele with such big
words as," You're the wittiest, the quickest the
sharpest, you're the most hilarious!" When Star
interrupts him with a stupid word or phrase Kaltag often
smacks the smaller dog. He is also good natured and
actually dislikes Steele as much as Nikki and Star.
"He's the most malicious the most disgusting the
most obnoxious. The most revolting the most
repulsive..." |
| Star |
Siberian
Husky |
Gray and
Cream |
Blue |
Star is the weaker dog in
Steele's gang. He merely hangs around with the other
three dogs for companionship and protection. He feels
safer with them than alone, for he is frightened of
mostly anything. He too joins in the teasing of Balto,
but when Steele leaves he also joins forces with Nikki
and kaltag, saying," He's no lap dog!" The trio
later dump Steele and decide that they would rather hang
out with Balto and be friendly and have a trust in one
another than to be opressed by Steele. |
| Sylvie |
Afgan Hound |
Cream |
Black |
Sylvie is friend to all
the dogs of Nome, except Balto. She is the gossip center
of town, and always knows what's going on. She was once
told by Steele that Balto and Jenna were in the boiler
room," And they went in together and they came out
together." Sylvie is best friends with Jenna and
Dixie, and they often lounge around together, either on
the street on barrels or in the Old Mill. She too found
out about Steele and left the Old Mill with the other
dogs, leaving Steele to sit with himself. |
| Dixie |
Lhasa Apso |
Snow and
Rose |
Black |
Dixie is the small dog who
is madly in love with Steele. Every time she sees him she
turns to mush. Her friends are Jenna and Sylvie, and they
are often seen walking about Nome. Dixie finally found
out that Steele was a loser and slapped him in front of
everybody. After that Steele was shunned. Dixie, though
small and kind, is obviously one nasty pooch! |
| Morse |
Bulldog |
Brown |
Black |
Morse lives in the
telegraph office with his master. His job is to relay any
important messages from the office to the Old Mill where
they are deciphered by Doc. Morse played a key role in
informing the dogs about the diphtheria epidemic that had
struck Nome, as well as current news on the team that was
carrying the medicine. |
| Doc |
St. Bernard |
Brown |
Black |
Doc is the oldest dog in
Nome. He is very wise and is able to translate human
morse code. He is also a good physician, since he used to
do a lot of work looking for lost human skiiers in the
mountains while he was still in his youth. He spends the
majority of his time in the Old Mill with the other dogs
of Nome. He has a vast array of stories to be told and
the dogs enjoy his company. |
| Kemo |
Wolf |
White |
Black |
Kemo is the wild wolf who
lives in the woods near Nome. He and Balto met after
Balto had lost the medicine after falling off a cliff.
Kemo, after howling, showed Balto the true strength
inside him and Balto managed to pull the medicine up the
cliff. The same age as Balto, Kemo is very wise, and
knows a lot about the forest and living as a wolf should.
His own pack was killed by hunters and he now lives as a
solitary lone wolf. |
| Rosy |
Human |
----------- |
Blue |
Rosy is the child owner of
Jenna. She loves to play with her pet husky as much as
she loves sledding. Her dreams came true when her parents
bought her a child-sized dogsled. She wasted no time in
strapping Jenna to the sled and off they went. Unlike the
other citizens of Nome, Rosy believe that Balto is a good
dog, and wishes that he would be able to pull her sled
along with Jenna. She was the eighteenth child to get
sick with diphtheria in one week. Her only hope was the
medicine, which was on its way with the sled team! |
| Gunnar
Kaasen |
Human |
----------- |
Blue |
Gunnar Kaasen is the
musher of Steele's team. He was chosen to lead the team
to Nenana to pick up the medicine after the dogs had
raced to see who would pull the sled. They left that
evening. Although Kaasen had excellent guidance, Steele
ran off course and the sled went down an icy slope.
Gunnar was knocked unconscious for the rest of the
journey, even after Balto had come and rescued the team.
He woke up a few days later in Nome's hospital, confused,
but happy to be alive! |
| Dr. Welsh |
Human |
----------- |
Black |
Dr. Welsh is the chief
physician in Nome. He was the one to diagnose the severe
diphtheria epidemic that was quickly spreading through
Nome. After quarantining the hospital he sent a telegraph
to Anchorage, requesting antitoxin. After several relayed
messages they finally located enough medicine in Juneau,
and it was quickly sent by train to Nenana, where it
would have to be met by a dogsled team to be taken the
rest of the way. Dr. Welsh administered the antitoxin as
soon as it arrived and managed to save the lives of most
of the children. |
| Mr.
Johansson |
Human |
----------- |
Black |
Mr. Johanssen is the
carpenter of Nome. He makes a lot of wooden things from
dogsleds, rocking chairs, and even coffins. He made a
special child-sized sled at the request of Rosy's parents
adn was happy to see Rosy's excitement at seeing it for
the first time. Unfortunately, after the epidemic began
to spread he was asked to make several child-sized
coffins for the children who had already died of the
horrible disease. Luckily very few of them were needed. |
| Rosy's
Parents |
Human |
----------- |
------- |
Rosy's parents live with
their daughter in a small house in the center of Nome.
They are fairly well-off and were able to afford a
special custom-built dogsled for Rosy. They were
horrified to find out that Rosy had diphtheria but still
had faith that the team would make it back in time with
the medicine; so many children had died already. When the
team was lost and the lantern that was kept lit as long
as teh team was safe was put out, Rosy's parents almost
lost all hope. But then the team arrived, led by Balto,
and the children, including Rosy, were saved. |
| Telegraph
Operator |
Human |
----------- |
Black |
The telegraph operator
played a key role in the epidemic. He relayed messages to
and from various cities in Alaska with news about the
epidemic and the team's location via several checkpoints.
He was the first to find out that the team had been lost
somewhere betwen the first ans second checkpoints. He had
placed a lantern outside his office to keep lit, in order
to guide the team back. When he heard that the team had
been lost too long he went outside and snuffed it out. As
the team arrived at Nome, however, he relit the flame and
waved to the incoming dogs. |
