In Memory Of Charles Shorter

Retired Army Lt. Col. Charles Boulware Shorter, Lansing, died Friday, February 4, 2000 at St. John Hospital, Leavenworth. He was 81.

He was born October 7, 1918 at Sedalia, Mo., the son of Marshall and Mary Shorter.

He was a career military officer serving the United States Army.

Those who knew him during World War II, knew him as Captain Shorter. He was C. Co. commander, In the 819th Tank Destroyer Battalion while stationed in the Palau Islands. He earned eleven medals and the Combat Infantryman's Badge Army Commendation medal for service in Viet Nam. He was in the Kansas National Guard Reserve cavalry prior to World War II. He received numerous awards and decorations that include Bronze Star Medals for action in Korea (1951-52), and Vietnam in 1961-62. Graduate of Officer Candidate School, Fort Sill, Okla. Graduate of Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga. Graduate of Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, served on the Board of Neighborhood House, volunteered at Crushing Memorial Hospital and was a vestry member of St. Paul Episcopal Church.

He married Viola V. Dunn, she survives at the home.

He is also survived by a son, Charles Shorter, Jr., St. Joseph, Mo.; two daughters, Vice Bice, Lawrence, and Marsha Rinetti, Towanda, Ill.; two brothers, Marshall Shorter and Sam Shorter, both of Longview, Texas; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Monday at the Davis Funeral Chapel with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev. David Hall will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Leavenworth National Cemetery.
