M. E. (Gene) Overton of the Paint Creek Community died in Haskell Memorial Hospital
on June 1, 2000. Gene was born in Burleson, Texas on January 10, 1909 and moved to
Haskell County at the age of eight. He attended Post Community School and graduated
from Stamford High School. He attended and graduated from Texas A&M College in
1933 and married Mabel Jones in 1936 in Rule, Texas. Gene served in the army as
Company Commander of the 819th Tank Destroyer Battalion in the Pacific in
W.W.II which saw duty in the Palau Islands at the war's end. Returning to Paint Creek,
Gene and Mabel began a farming/ranching operation and were deeply involved in
activities in community as well as the surrounding area. Gene represented Paint Creek on
the California Creek Soil and Water Conservation board and was selected
Conservationist of the Year by the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club
Int. He also served on the Federal Home Administration board, Haskell Hospital board,
Stamford Electric Co-Op board, Paint Creek School board, Farmer's Co-Op Gin board,
served as Scoutmaster of Troop 48 in Paint Creek for 20 years, and received the Silver
Beaver Award which is the highest award presented by a Council to a volunteer. He was a
Mason and a member of the Eastern Star, Haskell Chapter, Council, and
Commandry and was presented his 50 year pin in all bodies. He taught the adult Sunday
school class at the Paint Creek United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He was also
well known for spending many afternoons at a domino table during his later years.
Gene is survived by his wife of 63 years Mabel , three sons, William (Bill)
Overton of Abilene, Wallar and Steffi Overton of Paint Creek, and Mike and Linda
Overton of Allen and four grandchildren Paige, Hans, Marcus, and Brooke Overton. The
