Prof. Abraham Béhar                                                             To the President of the Belarus Republic

President of IPPNW Europe                                                  Mr. Alexander Lukachenko

by the Ambassador of Belarus in Paris

28 Nov. 1999

Very honored President Lukachenko,

IPPNW is an international Medical Society founded by Professor Lown of Boston and Professor Tschasov of Moscow. During the European council meeting on November 27th. 1999 in Paris, we were informed of the imprisonment of our colleague Professor Yuri Bandazhevsky, Rector of the Medical Institute of Gomel. We are very concerned that this excellent scientist is unable to continue the remarkable work on the health problems among people in contact with the fallout of Chernobyl.

Such work is essential for medical science and for research in measures to be taken to protect the esxposed population especially childern and women in child bearing age.

If this data were to be published in international medical journals we are convined that international financial support could be abtained to alleviate and treat the effects of the Chernobyl accident on the population of Belarus.

Professor Yuri Bandazhevsky is among the most eminent specialists in this field.

We request that you will personally reconsider the situation of Professor Bandazhevsky and his future work both in the interest of the population of your country and of the world. We would be very grateful for any information that you could gives us about Professor Bandazhevsky.

Your sincerly

Prof. Abraham Béhar

President of IPPNW Europe
