Photo 3-H: Close-Up of Schafenberg automatic coupler. The mechanical coupling operates in a similar manner to a buck-eye coupler but the Schafenberg system also incorporates automatic connection of electrical circuits and air connections. The mechanical `cup and cone' coupling head also incorporates the air connections. The curved piece above the mechanical coupling head is the electrical coupling head unit, (Seen with cover closed to protect electrical connections) This unit contains all electrical interconnections between units when running in multiple. The complete coupling unit is fitted to the vehicle drawgear via a shock absorbing arm. The couplers are also fitted with centering devices to ensure correct allignment is maintained to allow automatic coupling.
