SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING
FOR
SENIOR CITIZENS
By
Jeffrey R. Helwig
PURPOSE
To provide senior citizens with reasonable and effective information and skills through “hands on” training, and by taking preventative measures that will aid them in avoiding the criminal and greatly increase their chances to survive an attack.
FORWARD
Because of the dangerous society that we live in today, we are faced with the possibility of becoming the victim of a violent crime. Preventative measures, use of force and safety play an extremely important role in today`s society. If we are to avoid the criminal or survive an attack, we must be able to effectively and reasonably choose from an array of learned skills. The following is a brief summary of the skills and information that will be taught to senior citizens for self-defense measures.
Self-defense instruction is the beginning of a process of learning how to avoid becoming a victim. Personal self-defense is not warfare; it is not vengeance; it is not an art; it is not a sporting event; it is not a movie or television fight scene.
Self-defense is preparation to minimize the possibility of assault. It is training to learn and use appropriate and effective physical actions if there is no practical available alternative. Self-defense expressly limits the degree of force to the least, which can be used to avert, stop, or escape from an intended assault.
This chart is patterned after the law enforcement use of force model, and has been adapted to fit the needs for self-defense measures. The chart shows the criminal's, and attacker's actions, levels of danger and the use of force options for self-defense. A person only needs to accurately place any situation into one of a few defined categories and match the proper category of response. This will assist a person to better understand the concept of self-defense, and will thereby help them to respond properly and promptly in times of danger and acute stress.
The first thing that a student will be taught, is how the mind and body work; PRINCIPLES OF BALANCE AND PSYCHOLOGY - centering, speed and power; how the body works (mechanically) to attack / defend / control / resist; what and how humans perceive, pay attention to, remember, learn, and decide - especially in acute stress and emergency conditions; what happens during and after critical incidents. The student is taught how to maintain self-control, focus and concentration during dangerous situations so they will be able to react effectively and reasonably and greatly increase their chances of survival.
Students will be instructed in section 505 (Use of Force in Self-Protection) of the Pennsylvania Crimes code. This is necessary to avoid any criminal or civil liability during the use of force. The law provides for the use of force in self-protection under certain circumstances, and the students are taught what these circumstances are.
Students will be taught how to avoid the criminal. They will be informed on how criminals think and what they look for in a victim. Students will learn where not to go alone and how to take safety measures while traveling, parking, driving, while in buildings, while at home, etc.
VERBAL SKILLS
Students will learn how to talk to a potential criminal in an attempt to make him flee. They will be taught how to act and not to panic. This is very important for survival.
Some people carry firearms for protection. These students will be instructed exactly when it would be justified under State law to use a firearm and under what conditions.
Students will be taught how and when to use Pepper Spray against an attacker according to State law. Actual training videos will be viewed on the use of pepper spray and the reactions of those who have been sprayed.
Students will be taught how to use other objects that they carry with them on a daily basis as weapons, (keys, pens, purses, umbrellas, canes, etc.).
Students will be taught a few effective blocks, strikes and kicks that could reasonably be performed by a senior against an attacker. Simulated attacks will be created so the student can actually use some of the defensive techniques they are learning. The students will also learn about the weaker more vulnerable areas of the body and how a person may react when force is applied to these areas.
LENGTH OF TRAINING
This training is 8 hours long and will be conducted in two 4-hour blocks of instruction on different days. Upon completion, the student will be awarded a certificate for completing a certified basic self-defense course.
REFRESHER COURSE
It is recommended that all students attend this training every six months to keep this information fresh in their minds. This will help them to recall the information in times of danger and stress.
HANDOUTS
Students will be provided all of the necessary information to study on their own so they will be able to refresh their memories and practice their learned skills.
COST
There is a fee of $15.00 per person attending the course.
